We are back at our trailer park project again! We love the personalities of community cats, and this one made us chuckle! This beautiful orange kitty will never have to have another litter, and with vaccines, will hopefully lead a healthier and more peaceful life going forward!

A community trapper asked for our help to Trap-Neuter-Return a large colony of cats living inside a trailer park. Together, we have helped 23 cats!!!! We probably have about 50-75 cats to go, but it’s a great start! We love when community members get involved and help us trap. Together we accomplish more!

We needed to re-trap this friendly community cat for a medical checkup, but he is very trap savvy and we were unsuccessful with humane live traps and set over traps. We set up a drop trap, and when he came over to say hi, we constantly threw treats under the trap to lure him under. Generally you won’t be this close while drop trapping so you don’t scare the cats, but this is a good example of adapting your trapping methods to each cat for success!

July was a doozy! We trapped at locations all over San Diego including the auto garage, the abandoned house, a restaurant parking lot, and one street in particular that had at least 60 cats roaming around.

One cat we found was actually someone’s pet who had been lost for THREE YEARS! She was able to be reunited with her owner thanks to her microchip.

All of the adult cats we trapped were spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and treated for fleas and parasites. A few cats received extra care like dental extractions and antibiotics. Feral Cat Coalition provided these services at no cost to the cat’s caregivers.

Here’s what you do when you catch a wild animal in your trap instead of a cat! For most animals (raccoons, possums), you can simply open the trap again (we love Tomahawk Live Traps because they have an easy sliding back door!). For skunks, approach the trap slowly and quietly while holding a large towel, blanket, or tarp in front of you as a shield. Gently drape the cover over the cage to calm the animal, carefully open the door and stand back. Most skunks will not spray and just want to get away, as you can see from this little guy’s skedaddling!

We were able to reunite a pet cat named Nina with her family after she had been missing for THREE YEARS. We trapped Nina during a TNR project, and found she had a microchip! We called her family, who could not believe she was still alive! They picked her up from our clinic and we hope they can pick up right where they left off, and Nina can enjoy the rest of her years living in luxury safely inside! This is why microchipping your pet is SO IMPORTANT, as well as updating your information on it. Without a chip, we never would have been able to bring Nina home! This happy story is another facet of why TNR projects around the community are so important.

If you make an owned pet appointment for your cat with Feral Cat Coalition to get them spayed or neutered, you have the option to add on a $10 microchip (only available for owned cats at the same time as their spay/neuter surgery).

We trapped this beautiful boy (named Mathias by his wonderful caretaker) yesterday. Our vets discovered this morning that he has three broken canines that will need to be extracted before we return him. We need to raise $300 to cover his extra medical care and prolonged stay at our clinic while he recovers. If you can donate any amount, big or small, to help Mathias, we would be so grateful!!! This might be the only vet care he ever receives in his life so we want to set him up for success!

Broken teeth are very painful for cats and make it difficult for them to eat and defend themselves. Unfortunately, Mathias is not friendly enough to place in a rescue or home, so he will be returned to his dedicated caregiver who gives his outdoor colony food and water every day. Even feral cats deserve love and compassion 💖

We have been working to TNR a colony of tuxedo cats! So far, we have gotten 5 tuxedos and 1 tabby! The black cat in the video is the very smart and elusive mom, so we will keep working to catch her!
