Yesterday at the "Neighbors for Neighbors" gathering, our Choir raised their voices to bring joy and unity outside ’s federal building. Our Member Services Specialist, Naylenie, also shared about her work as a partner and advocate for members of our community:

"I show up. Consistently. As a person they can call when they are scared and don't know what to do next. Someone who helps them find the right advocate, the right resource, the right person, so that they don't just survive this process, but come out the other side with their dignity intact. That is the work. Not a program. Not a service. A human being, showing up for another human being."

often looks like something simple but powerful: being present, listening, and walking alongside neighbors through difficult moments. We were grateful to stand with our community, sharing stories and song — this is the kind of community we believe in.

Voices of Our City is known in part for it's sound, but did you know that every one of our Choir Member songs begins somewhere quiet?

It begins in our songwriting workshops, in a circle of chairs, in the courage it takes to put words to lived experience. For many of our Choir members, this is the first time they’ve been asked to tell their story—and to be heard.

Your support makes this possible. Your generosity sustains the creative process and the personal growth that allow our members to show up with confidence, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

Thank you for being part of our community. We need you. Please give now: https://f.mtr.cool/qgnojqokpk

🎙️Sounds of the Sidewalk. Season 3 is HERE — and we're opening with pure joy.

In February we honored Black History Month with a special performance that highlighted the joy, the creativity, and the cultural richness that flows through Voices of Our City. And what better way to kick off our season of stories and connection than to recap a conversation we had with Choir Members, Stacy, Dr. P, Dahani, Benjamin and DeDe about the topic of Black Joy and what that looks like for each of them.

There is so much to honor and celebrate -- listen now: https://f.mtr.cool/autismvahu or wherever you stream your podcasts.

Our Performance Choir is Voices’ longest-running and most visible program, and behind every concert is a carefully built circle of support that helps our members stand taller and believe more deeply in themselves.

This support begins on Monday Mornings at our Open Rehearsal. Starting at 11 a.m. each Monday, anyone from the community is welcome to come and sing, enjoy a warm coffee and stay for a hot meal afterwards. The connection is evident in the smiles we see.

When you give to Voices of Our City, you are supporting programming that impacts lives and helps individuals out of homelessness. Today, consider a gift of any size to support our mission. Visit https://f.mtr.cool/zjixkyfqof

North County… you felt that, right? 🔥✨

On February 4th, we took the stage at to kick off Black History Month with a journey through the legacy of Black music — from African folk roots to jazz, R&B, funk, and disco.

Our Choir Members brought power, joy, and undeniable talent to every note. It was a celebration of resilience, culture, and the music that continues to shape generations.

Huge gratitude to the incredible team at the California Center for the Arts for the warm welcome. We can’t wait to be back in North County soon.

An Intro of the Choir

Through music therapy, case management, and advocacy, Voices of Our City Choir is transforming the perception and experience of homelessness through the healing power of the arts.

Founded in 2016 by two San Diego-based musicians using music to help those experiencing homelessness, Voices of Our City Choir was created in response to the current housing crisis. The choir serves as a space for mutual aid and community building, as well as giving voice to San Diego’s unsheltered neighbors.

The choir showcases the abilities and powerful potential of every individual. For people facing extreme hardships, singing provides positive self-esteem and a sense of community. The love and support present at rehearsals and performances helps choir members regain hope and move forward in their lives.

Since 2016, the choir has become an in-demand performance ensemble - with as many as 15 private and public performances in a single month. We have been featured in a documentary, The Homeless Chorus Speaks, by filmmaker Susan Polis Schutz, which has aired on PBS over 1,500 times since its release date. Additionally, we have performed live on Fox TV, KPBS, NPR, PBS, and Newshour, and featured in stories by the Emmys, LA Times, The Village Voice (NY), San Diego Union Tribune, and more.
