How can we help Ensenada after Storm Rachel?
This weekend, Storm Rachel hit Baja California hard, with Ensenada among the most affected areas. In Maneadero, the overflowing river and landslides have left families missing, homes destroyed, and entire communities struggling to recover.
According to the latest reports we have received, five people have lost their lives, 11 remain missing, and four people have been rescued. Among those missing are entire families, teenagers, and a young woman serving in the mission field. Other families are still desperately searching for loved ones.
More than 200 people are staying in shelters. One of the neighborhoods where we serve has been cut off after its access bridge collapsed, and 20 neighborhoods are without electricity or phone service. Many families have lost the roofs over their heads, while others have seen their homes filled with mud, leaving them with very little to salvage.
Our hearts are with every family waiting for news of someone they love, with those who have lost their homes, and with everyone working tirelessly to help their neighbors.
We want to help.
We are hoping to organize a volunteer brigade to support the people of Maneadero, especially those whose homes are in the most urgent need of attention.
Right now, we need willing hands to help with search and rescue efforts through the appropriate emergency teams, clear mud and debris, and salvage whatever can be saved from damaged homes. We also want to support the people staying in shelters.
We would love to establish a fund to help families repair their roofs and protect what remains of their homes. As we assess the needs, we will also put together a list of essential items to purchase and donate, including beds and mattresses, blankets, clothing, shoes, and food.
For now, one of the greatest needs is people willing to show up and help, along with donations to support families in the shelters.
If you are in Ensenada or nearby and would like to volunteer, contribute supplies, or help us organize this effort, please reach out to us.
We know we cannot do everything, but together we can do something meaningful for families who are facing one of the hardest moments of their lives.
Please keep the missing and their families in your thoughts and prayers. May those who are still searching find their loved ones, and may every family affected by this storm find the help, strength, and support they need.
