We join the baseball community in mourning the passing of Randy Jones, a respected MLB alumnus and longtime member of the Major League Baseball Retired Players Association.
Randy was the San Diego Padres’ first Cy Young Award winner, earning the National League honor in 1976 and becoming a two-time All-Star during a career defined by grit, consistency, and quiet excellence. Over a decade in Major League Baseball, he left an enduring mark not only through his achievements on the mound, but through the respect he earned from teammates, fans, and the game itself.
Just as meaningful was Randy’s deep connection to the San Diego community. Long after his playing days, he remained a familiar and generous presence—supporting local charities, youth programs, and community events, and continuing to give back to the city that embraced him. His approach to service reflected the same humility and integrity that defined his career in baseball.
As a member of the MLB Retired Players Association, Randy remained part of the extended baseball family, exemplifying the lifelong bond shared by those who played the game at its highest level.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Randy’s family, friends, former teammates, and all who were touched by his life and legacy. He will be remembered not only as a Cy Young Award winner, but as a community-minded leader who represented baseball with dignity, generosity, and class.
Rest in peace, Randy.
