UFCW Local 135

UFCW Local 135 UFCW Local 135 represents essential workers in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Mr. Meyers started an organizing campaign for grocery clerks.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 135, has a long history dating back to the early 1900’s. In 1903 the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, Local 229 of the Western Federation of Butchers, also known as the Butchers Union and Meat Cutters Union, became affiliated with the San Diego Federated Trades and Labor Council in 1903. In 1917 the Retail Clerks orga

nized and affiliated with San Diego Federated Trades and Labor Council. Meat Cutters Local 229, under the leadership of Secretary and Business Manager Max Osslo, became one of the most respected and powerful unions in the United States. Osslo served for 46 years, beginning in 1936, as head of the Meat Cutters in San Diego and was key to creating apprenticeship programs for meat cutters, slaughterhouse workers, and others in the industry to help them become journeymen. He served on many boards and commissions during his tenure at Local 229, including on the national board of the Leukemia Society, whom UFCW Local 135 still has a relationship with to this day. The contemporary era of the Retail Clerks Union started in 1943 with International representative Samuel Meyers. In 1944, Retail Clerks Local 1222 received their charter from the Retail Clerks International Association. The United Food and Commercial Workers union was founded in 1978 when the Retail Clerks International Association merged with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters. Also joining were the Barbers and Beauticians Union. In January of 1986 the membership of the Retail Clerks of Local 1222 and those of the Meat Cutters at Local 229 merged to form one of the biggest unions in San Diego County, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 135. Today, under the leadership of President Todd Walters, Secretary-Treasurer Grant Tom, and Recorder Maribel Mckinze, UFCW Local 135 has a membership of approximately 12,500 workers with nearly 7000 retirees. The current membership of Local 135 consists of workers in various fields including grocery & retail, health, pharmacy & dental, meat & sugar processing, casino, and cannabis.

The next chapter for UFCW Local 135 is set to begin.

After nearly two years in the making, our new headquarters will officially opening for union business on Tuesday, June 16 at 8:00 a.m.

Located at 10075 Carroll Canyon Road off the I-15 freeway, this new space was built with the future of our union in mind by creating more room to serve members, strengthening organizing, and allowing us to grow together for generations to come. While we honor the history made in Mission Valley, we’re excited for what this next era makes possible.

To celebrate, we’ll be hosting a Grand Opening Member Appreciation Day on August 1. More details coming soon!

Forward Together, Stronger Than Ever!

THEY DID IT!

The Green Vests at REI in Kearny Mesa have officially voted YES to join UFCW Local 135!

After months of organizing, conversations, courage, and solidarity, more than 100 REI workers made their voices heard and chose a stronger future together.

By voting union, these workers are standing up to fight for fair pay, sustainable scheduling, stronger workplace protections, and a real voice on the job. Their victory makes San Diego REI the 12th unionized REI store in the country, the third in California, and the largest unionized REI location nationwide.

This victory belongs to the workers who organized, supported one another, and stayed united every step of the way! Congrats and welcome to UFCW Local 135!

After rallying alongside workers at REI on Tuesday, UFCW Local 135 staff joined our Teamsters Local 542 union siblings on the picket line during their ULP strike in front of Transdev in Kearny Mesa.

We're proud to have stood with them on their 16th day on the line as they continue the fight for a fair contract that addresses extreme operational stress and provides them better work schedules.

Solidarity means showing up for one another, and we will continue standing with our union siblings.

This is what solidarity looks like!
