March and Ash union members Dawn Nelson and James Case joined UFCW Local 135 President Todd Walters and Secretary-Treasurer Grant Tom in speaking before the San Diego City Council in support of an ordinance aimed at leveling the playing field for licensed cannabis businesses and the workers they employ.
The ordinance would help locally permitted cannabis dispensaries combat out-of-town delivery services that conduct business in the city of San Diego without paying local sales or cannabis taxes. It also creates a mechanism allowing private businesses and cannabis worker unions to seek damages against cannabis operators that do not obtain the proper permits to operate within the City.
The ordinance passed unanimously on its first reading and now moves forward for a final vote.
A special thank you to Dawn, Jim, and fellow cannabis worker Tori for taking the time to stand up for good jobs, fair competition, and a responsible cannabis industry. Their voices helped demonstrate why protecting licensed businesses also means protecting the workers who depend on them.
We look forward to the final vote and implementation.
