A BIG Thank you to everyone who attended the Fish and Game Commission Meetings this week.

If you can't reach the water, you can't fish it.

California's coastline belongs to all of us, but having fish in the ocean is only part of the equation. Recreational anglers also need meaningful access to the places where we fish.

That means access to our coastline, beaches, bays, harbors, piers, boat ramps and other places that allow Californians to get on—or next to—the water.

For recreational anglers, public access isn't a luxury. It's part of our fishing heritage.

And access can never be taken for granted.

Decisions involving coastal development, regulations, closures and fisheries management can affect where and how Californians are able to fish. That's one reason organizations like CCA California matter.

⚖️ Advocacy isn't only about fish.

It's also about making sure recreational anglers have a seat at the table when decisions affecting our ability to fish are being made.

Because conservation and access should work together.

We can protect California's marine resources and preserve responsible recreational fishing opportunities for future generations.

🎣 One Victory. Every Angler Benefits.

Sometimes the biggest victories aren't the loudest—they're the ones that make life better for every angler.

For years, California fishing licenses expired on December 31, regardless of when you purchased them. If you bought a license late in the year, you still had to renew just weeks or months later.

That didn't make sense.

Thanks to the efforts of anglers and organizations advocating for practical improvements, California transitioned to a 365-day fishing license—giving anglers a full year of fishing from the date they purchase their license.

It's a simple change, but it reflects something bigger:

When anglers work together and have a voice, positive change is possible.

This is exactly why CCA California exists.

Every meeting attended.
Every conversation with decision-makers.
Every public comment submitted.
Every member who supports our mission.

It all adds up to protecting and improving recreational fishing opportunities for everyone.

Why Recreational Fishing Matters

Every time a new fishing regulation is proposed…

Every time public access to our coast is challenged…

Every time decisions are made that could impact where, when, and how we fish…

Someone needs to be at the table representing recreational anglers.

That's where CCA California comes in.

We work alongside fisheries managers, legislators, scientists, and decision-makers to ensure the voices of California's recreational fishing community are heard.

Our mission isn't just about protecting fish—it's about protecting the opportunity for future generations to experience the same incredible fisheries that have shaped so many of our lives.

How did one of the largest marine conservation organizations in the country begin?

Not with a government agency.

Not with a billionaire.

Not with a large corporation.

It started in 1977, when 14 concerned recreational anglers gathered inside a small tackle shop after years of watching redfish and speckled trout populations decline because of commercial overfishing.

Instead of accepting the status quo, they took action.

That meeting became the beginning of what is now the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA).

Their early victories—including helping eliminate destructive gill nets along the Texas coast and securing gamefish protections for red drum and speckled trout—proved that anglers could be powerful conservationists when they worked together.

Today, CCA has grown into a nationwide grassroots organization, and since 2015, Coastal Conservation Association of California has been dedicated to conserving, promoting, and enhancing California's marine resources while protecting recreational anglers' access to our fisheries.

From advocating for artificial reefs and hatchery programs to protecting the live bait industry, supporting white seabass and California halibut restoration, helping secure California's 12-month fishing license, and standing up for science-based fisheries management, CCA continues to make a real difference.
