Back to school means back to PLAY!!!

We’re so excited to be back with our friends at San Diego Refugee Tutoring for another year of learning, laughing, and growing together!

Through applied improv, we’re creating opportunities for students to practice communication, build confidence, make new connections, and discover the joy of expressing themselves… all while having a whole lot of fun!

One of our favorite things about improv? There’s no single right answer, mistakes are celebrated, and everyone’s ideas matter.

A huge thank you to the incredible SDRT staff, tutors, and volunteers for welcoming us back and for the important work you do to support San Diego’s refugee and immigrant communities.

Here’s to another year of saying ”YES, AND!”

Welcome Gary Ware | Breakthrough Play to our Board of Directors! Yes!! And it’s true! A match made by the improv gods some might say.

Since day one Gary had been 1000% on our side. Sometimes guiding, always encouraging and even teaching some of our community-based classes. If you know Gary, you know he’s serious about creating inclusive environments where people are able to access their innermost gifts. And then using that access to activate them to improve their lives. This superpower is saving the world - one yes, and at a time.

A bit about Gary:

Gary Ware is an improviser, educator, author, and lifelong believer in the power of play to help people connect, grow, and see new possibilities.
Gary stumbled into his first improv class 15 years ago while trying to become a better public speaker. What he found was much bigger. Improv gave him a place to play, take risks, make mistakes, connect with strangers, and rediscover a part of himself that had gotten buried under the pressures of adulthood. That experience changed the direction of his life.

For the past decade, Gary has taught improv with a focus on helping people build confidence, creativity, connection, and joy, both onstage and off. He currently teaches at Finest City Improv and Mockingbird Improv in San Diego and regularly performs at Finest City Improv. Over the years, he has trained at National Comedy Theatre, Sidestage Improv, Camp Improv Utopia, and Second City Hollywood, along with countless workshops and drop-ins across the country.

1,000 HOURS OF IMPACT!

In just 18 months, it’s improv has organized and delivered over 1,000 hours of participant learning and engagement across San Diego!

That’s 1,000+ hours of people showing up, stepping outside their comfort zones, finding their voices, building connections, and discovering what they’re capable of through play.

And every single hour was provided at no cost to our community participants.

Behind this milestone are so many moments of laughter, courage, creativity, and connection. Moments that are making a lasting difference.

To our incredible community partners, instructors,board members, volunteers, donors, and most importantly, the participants who continue to show up and say “YES, AND!”—thank you for making this possible.

1,008 hours down. Countless ahead.

We’re incredibly excited to announce improv to impact!

The idea is simple: organizations can now bring applied improv training into their professional development to help sustainably fund free research-backed improv classes for San Diegans who are unsheltered or housing-insecure, immigrants, refugees, or members of other historically underserved communities.

We are making quality improv training more accessible than it has ever been.

Improv started in the community. The first classes were not designed to be ‘funny’ or ‘make an audience laugh,’ they were designed to create a space where people can practice communication, collaboration, adaptability, listening, creativity, navigating uncertainty and so much more.. And it’s no secret that joy is one of the biggest side effects.

Most of us rarely get an opportunity to deliberately practice these skills until we’re in a real situation where the consequences matter.

“I feel more free, confident and able to speak up for myself” “I feel less socially awkward and more connected to my people” “I don’t have any other place where I can fully express myself like I do in improv” “ I feel more like myself.” These can be pivotal experiences in anyone’s life.

The mission of improv to impact isn’t separate from it’s improv’s mission - it helps sustain it.

improv to impact is for companies, nonprofits, colleges and universities, healthcare orgs, government agencies, community orgs, leadership teams, boards, etc. Hire us for retreats, professional development, leadership transitions, team building, conferences, etc.
