💡 Launched in 2018 and informed by a partnership with The Brookings Institution, EDC’s initiative sets regional goals around quality jobs in small business, local talent pipelines, and thriving households as drivers of economic growth.

Every year, EDC’s Research Bureau conducts a data update on San Diego’s progress towards the goal. As we release in this year's report, our region finds ourselves at a challenging inflection point: Our current growth is running parallel to the region’s persistently high cost of living, wide income gaps, and the ability for all San Diegans to live comfortably and thrive.

EDC’s President & CEO Mark Cafferty notes “Simply put, our progress is not outpacing our problems. And that isn’t something to run from or ignore—but rather something to face and resolve.” Just four years to 2030, it's more critical than ever for employers to lean in around opportunities to advance our region’s economy through inclusion—not just as a principle, but as a practice.

Dear EDC Investors and partners, I hope this message finds you well as we close out the first quarter of 2026. It was a shaky and unpredictable quarter for the region and the nation in so many ways. Yet through it all, our team at EDC continues to draw great inspiration from all of you […]

Despite promising recent growth in annual earnings, San Diego remains one of the most expensive metros in the U.S.—a critical barrier to creating the thriving regional households critical to our region's economic growth and competitiveness.

On average, homeowners faced housing costs of $4,748 per month in 2024, and renters faced average prices reaching $4,039 in 2024. 58% of renters remained cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on rent.

NEW: San Diego’s economy is competitive and growing—yet this growth runs parallel to the region's persistently high cost of living, wide income gap, and stratified opportunities. 📊

As San Diego continues to make progress toward its 2030 goals—increasing quality jobs at small businesses, post-secondary education completions, and household incomes—our region requires both economic and inclusive growth.

Without it, we risk losing talent to more accessible regions, constraining local spending, and corroding our innovation economy, stalling our competitiveness altogether.

📝 Explore San Diego's progress in our annual progress report and learn how you can commit to inclusive growth. It's a business and economic imperative. ➡️ 2025.inclusiveSD.org

NEW: By the end of 2024, a San Diego household needed an income exceeding $235,000 to afford the median-priced home—a critical barrier to creating the thriving regional households critical to our region's economic growth and competitiveness.

Despite promising recent growth in annual earnings across the county, San Diego remains one of the most expensive metros in the U.S. On average, homeowners faced housing costs of $4,748 per month in 2024, 55.5% higher than 2019.

Renters faced similar pressures, with average rent prices reaching $4,039 in 2024, 38% higher than 2019. And as household incomes struggle to catch up to increasing prices, 58% of renters remained cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on rent.
