What if caring for the earth felt less like obligation β€” and more like love?

That's what Elara Gibbons explores in 'Gaia,' her poem in Issue 01 of The Work of Art.

She's a college student. This is her poem. And it will change how you think about what environmental care can sound like.

She's an English major at USD. She's an environmental activist. She wrote a poem called 'Gaia.'

And it reads like a conversation with the earth β€” not a lecture. Not a protest. A conversation.

Elara Gibbons understands something that most environmental writing misses: caring for the planet isn't an argument. It's a felt practice. The kind that lives in your hands and your feet, not just your head.

A Navy veteran and bookbinder from Colorado.
A Brooklyn painter and SAG-AFTRA actor.
An environmental activist in college.
A sculptor whose work has been shown internationally.
A Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Maine.

These are five of the 17 artists in Issue 01 of The Work of Art.

None of them knew each other. All of them answered the same question: what does care look like?

The hardest kind of care doesn't look like anything.

No grand gesture. No visible sacrifice. Just showing up. Paying attention. Doing the maintenance that nobody applauds.

That's the theme behind Issue 01 of The Work of Art. And 17 artists found it in places we never expected β€” in resin sculptures, in poems about the earth, in a painting called 'Empathy' that doesn't need a single word to explain itself.

Why CARE?

We wanted a theme that wasn't just a word β€” it was a lens. What are we paying attention to? What do we hold gently? What costs something to give?

17 artists answered in ways we couldn't have predicted β€” sculptures that embody resilience, poems that center daily maintenance over heroism, paintings that name vulnerability.
