Urban Street Angels Urban Street Angels is a non-profit organization with the mission of ending youth homelessness

Founded in 2012, Urban Street Angels is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization aimed at ending youth homelessness in San Diego, CA and beyond. We began as a small group of volunteers hitting the streets of Ocean Beach several times each month with backpacks of supplies and home-cooked meals, but we quickly discovered that San Diego has a vast number of resources dedicated toward feeding and supplying the homeless. Two critical parts of the puzzle were missing: supportive housing and work programs for transition-aged youth. Transition-aged youth are individuals between the ages of 18 and 25. The unique needs of this demographic are largely ignored by most homeless support services. This service gap helped inform our growth toward our current mission:

To end youth homelessness by providing supportive housing and job training to cultivate personal responsibility. We currently operate 5 supportive housing programs that also provide support services to our youth. With over 105 beds now, we not only provide a safe place for our youth to stay but also provide Case Management, mental health therapy, housing and job navigation, peer support and a trauma informed enviornment that is created just for our youth. Our main partners in these programs are The County of San Diego BHS and The Regional Task Force for the Homeless along with the San Diego Housing Commission. On the job training side, we operate 8 West as a social enterprise program that provides transitional employment and job skills training for our program clients. 8 West produces a line of premium bath, shower and spa products. And many of the youth in our housing programs learn how to become employable though this innovative program. 8 West soap and candles can be found online for sale at www.8west.org, or at select retailers in the San Diego area. Hailey came to Urban Street Angels the day after her 18th birthday, ready to start working and build a future for herself.

With support from her Career Services Specialist, Kam, she secured a job at SeaWorld and began exploring ways to pursue her passion for the beauty industry. Hailey took the initiative to find an affordable cosmetology program and connected with ALVA Beauty Collective. After hearing her story, the program awarded her a scholarship, and Urban Street Angels provided additional financial support to help make this opportunity possible.

Hailey is now training to become a nail technician and taking steps toward a career doing something she loves. We’re proud of her determination and excited to see where this journey takes her! 😊💅🩷

Through our collaboration with GRID Alternatives and our Padres 5-Tool Trade Academy, Urban Street Angels youth are getting hands-on experience and learning the skills they need to kickstart careers in the skilled trades☀️🔧

The Padres 5-Tool Trade Academy, in partnership with Padres Foundation , is helping our youth turn their goals into real career opportunities!

Sometimes, a set of keys represents so much more than a new apartment 🔑🏡

For Ruby, these keys represent hard work, growth, and a future she’s been working toward.

Through Urban Street Angels’ Padres 5-Tool Trade Academy, Ruby found direction and began building the foundation for the life she wanted. She earned her Registered Behavior Technician certification, found full-time work, built her credit, and overcame one of her biggest barriers to housing.

Now, she has the keys to her very first apartment!

Ruby is excited to make this new space a home and hopes that one day, she can bring her little brother to live with her and help him build a future of his own.

We couldn’t be prouder of you, Ruby. This is just the beginning! 💙

Last week, the Associated Builders and Contractors of San Diego met with our Career Services team to share more about their apprenticeship program and the opportunities available to young people looking to build careers in the trades.

It was a super informative conversation that gave our staff a better understanding of the program, what it offers, and how we can help connect our youth with these opportunities.

We’re grateful for their time and look forward to building this partnership and helping our youth take the next steps toward meaningful careers and a brighter future! 🛠️
