The Journey of Building Bamboo School in Kuta, BaliThe Bali Street Kids School Project, now known as Bamboo School in Kuta, Bali, started as a small learning initiative on the beach. However, due to regulations prohibiting rental activities on the beach, we had to find an alternative location. Eventually, we rented a small shop where we could hold classes for street children. Year after year, we continued renting the space for five years until a kind-hearted donor stepped in and generously provided land for us to use for 10 years. With hope and determination, we began building step by step. Initially, I thought using bamboo would be a more cost-effective choice, but reality proved otherwise. The expenses turned out to be much higher than expected, and the construction required skilled specialists—since not every builder could work with bamboo, especially for a well-designed structure. The process was anything but smooth. At one point, about $2,000 of donor funds were taken by an untrustworthy contractor. Despite this setback, we refused to give up. With the support of volunteers and the incredible children of YKPA, we pressed on. After spending more than $20,000, our small two-story bamboo school finally took shape.Today, this school provides a safe and nurturing learning space for street children and those living in slum areas. We are deeply grateful to all our donors, including Mr. Ian from Australia, Emma from Canada, Yunita from Darwin, and many other international volunteers who contributed to this journey. Special thanks also go to two exceptionally skilled bamboo builders, Mr. Arif and Pak Sudi. One of the most inspiring parts of this journey is Ketut Riski, a former street child who grew up at YKPA. We raised him, supported his education, and now, as an adult with a family of his own, he manages and lives in the Bamboo School, continuing the mission to help other children. This has been a long and challenging process, filled with obstacles and moments of stress, but in the end, the children now have a place to learn, grow, and dream.Thank you, God. Thank you to all the donors. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.
