AFSC-San Diego

AFSC-San Diego AFSC San Diego- US-Mexico Border Program is a Human Rights office that promotes and defends the rights of migrant workers and their families.

The American Friends Service Committee has more than a century of experience building peace in communities worldwide. Founded in the crucible of World War I by Quakers who aimed to serve both humanity and country while being faithful to their commitment to nonviolence, AFSC has worked throughout the world in conflict zones, in areas affected by natural disasters, and in oppressed communities to address the root causes of war and violence.

Yesterday, two teenage gunmen shot and killed Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nader Awad at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD). The victims were caring and courageous individuals who were deeply committed to their families, their community, and the ICSD. We mourn their deaths and hold their families and loved ones in the Light.

This violence does not occur in a vacuum. Islamophobic and racist rhetoric and policies are coming directly from the U.S. government and amplified by media outlets and commentators. We must use every available avenue to stop Islamophobia and build a world where people can live and worship in peace.

ICSD is more than just a mosque; the center also houses a school and is hub for community organizing and events. AFSC’s U.S.-Mexico Border Program has worked with ICSD for years, partnering with us on immigrant rights work, sharing their meeting spaces, and hosting AFSC speakers. This evening we will join them, along with CAIR, Muslim Leadership Council, and many others, for an interfaith vigil for the victims and families. Everyone in the San Diego area is welcome: Lindbergh Neighborhood Park at 6:30.

On International Workers’ Day, community organizations, union leaders, educators, and students came together to unite in solidarity with workers everywhere, by organizing a march and rally ending at the federal building where ICE detains people in the basement. They also called for abolishing ICE and the Border Patrol, closing the Otay Mesa Detention Center, divestment from the corporate war machine, and calling for support for universal healthcare, social housing, and education for all.
