Trans Youth Deserve Safety. The Supreme Court’s Ruling Won’t Stop Our Work
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled yesterday to temporarily block part of California’s student‑privacy protections and allow teachers to disclose a student’s gender identity to their parents without the student’s consent, even when a young person fears abuse, rejection, or homelessness if outed. This has raised fear and confusion for trans and nonbinary youth, their families, and educators across California.
Forced outing puts young people at risk of family conflict, housing instability, and mental‑health crises. This is harmful and deeply concerning.
The Court did not strike down the law entirely. This decision allows schools to move forward with policies that could require staff to notify parents if a student changes their name or gender marker. The case will continue in the lower courts.
The Center believes that trans and nonbinary youth deserve safety, dignity, privacy, and respect. Families deserve accurate information, not confusion or fear. Schools must remain safe, supportive places for all young people to learn and thrive.
To all trans and nonbinary students, their families, and educators across our region: We will continue working to defend the protections that keep youth safe and to push back against policies that cause harm.
If you or a young person in your life needs support or resources, The Center is here for you. Our Hillcrest Youth Center and South Bay Youth Center and Project TRANS at The Center provide resources, support, and connection.
