It tells us we are saved while shunning the very flesh we live in, promising heaven while it chains our history, dismissing our sufferings, silencing our voices.

In the church’s insistence on a salvation shaped by its whiteness, it fails to see that liberation, in all its raw and difficult beauty, is the only true promise of freedom Black folks can trust.

For without the fierce honesty and humanity of Black liberation theologies, the faith we are offered is not salvation but a shadow, a mirage that leaves us thirsty still."

It's mindlessly tragic that all of this reflection and commemoration has yielded nothing.

Resistance or terror? Depends on your perspective I guess.

Nat Turner's slave rebellion, which took place in Virginia in August 1831, was a significant and violent uprising led by Nat Turner, an enslaved man and self-proclaimed prophet. Turner believed he was chosen by God to lead his people to freedom.

The rebellion began on the night of August 21, when Turner and a group of followers killed Turner’s owner, Joseph Travis, and then moved from plantation to plantation, seeking to recruit others and liberate enslaved people. Over the course of about 48 hours, the group killed approximately 60 white individuals, including men, women, and children.
