About Cancer Can Kiss My Axe (CCKMA)
CCKMA was created in 2013 when 3 San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The number is up to six now. CCKMA is made up of mostly women firefighters but includes others who support firefighters. This is the sixth year the team will have walked and the team is sixteen strong this year. Each member has committed to raise a minimum of $2,300 in donations and will walk 60 miles, over three days, to demonstrate our determination in finding a cure for breast cancer.
In addition, CCKMA’s secondary goal is to raise enough funds to also donate to FirefighterAid1 the amount needed to purchase 2 heavy duty turnout washers for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. This type of washer effectively cleans deadly contaminants, while not damaging the integrity of firefighting fabric, over multiple washes. These washers are very expensive and hard to fund through the City budget. CCKMA is supporting this cause because we know that proper cleaning will directly aid in cancer prevention.
1 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operated by the San Diego Fireman's Relief Association (SDFRA) which cares for Firefighters and families in times of need. FirefighterAid is a donor-supported organization and relies upon the generosity of donors.
"Cancer Can Kiss My Axe" ("CCKMA")*
Established in 2013, and formerly known as “Team T**s and Axes”, this
group was formed after several San Diego women firefighters developed
breast cancer (hence the name "T**s and Axes").
The team participate in their first Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk in 2013
and has walked a total of 4 years. This year will be our 5th year
walking. The team ebbs and flows with regards to numbers. We have
had as many as 21 and as few as 10. This year’s number is 13 so far.
Our former name, “T**s and Axes”, we thought was a catchy name to
bring attention to our cause. However, even though the name was not
meant to be offensive, we listened when some told us that it might be.
The name was ultimately changed to “Team Cancer Can Kiss My Axe”.
Our team members come from all walks of life. Most of the walkers have
some connection to the fire service, but not all. The team has grown
in the past 4 years and we are proud to have raised over $90,000 for
breast cancer education, research and treatment.
While our team’s mission is to bring attention to firefighters and
breast cancer, we walk in support of ALL those impacted by breast
cancer. We are not exclusively dedicated to one breast cancer
organization. We raise funds for Susan G. Komen by participating in
the 3 Day Walk and Race for the Cure but we also support other cancer
organizations as well.
Wind & Fire Motorcycle Club*
Founded in April 1991, Wind & Fire Motorcycle Club is a united group
of firefighters who ride Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. The club
currently has over 5,000 members and 191 chapters. There are members
living in 49 states and 24 countries.
Wind & Fire MC has a secondary focus which is charity. The club
annually organizes over 34 charity motorcycle events around the world,
which primarily benefit children - burn injured children, kids with
cancer, needy kids at Christmas and children in the hospital. The San
Diego local chapter participates in many of these motorcycle events.
