The ama is considered 'female' because of its size, smooth curved lines and its function in providing balance to its larger, stronger male counterpart. The va'a, is considered to be the tino or body (Tahiti/Samoa). The female ama and male va'a are joined by the i'ato, which is flexible and moves in harmony with both bodies and the ocean.
