Maggie is the kind of volunteer everyone is glad to see walk in.

She brings calm confidence to every food sorting volunteer shift, guiding volunteers with clarity and keeping the work moving with her light humor. Since 2024, she’s come multiple times a week, often choosing to stay past her shift to clean, reset the space, and make sure the next crew starts strong. She’s trustworthy, reliable, and raises the energy of the room the moment she steps in. We’re proud to highlight Maggie as our August Volunteer of the Month! 🤩

For the third birthday in a row, 12‑year‑old Kiyara asked her guests to skip the gifts and bring groceries for neighbors in need instead 🛒✨

She turned her celebration into a full food drive, rallying neighbors, friends, and teachers to collect 737 pounds of food for families across San Diego. Kiyara hopes her tradition inspires other kids to get involved with their community in ways like this.

Meet Mia, our very first Hunger Relief Champion! 🏆

Mia is a store receiver at Sprouts, and making a difference in her community is something she cares deeply about. We're proud to recognize her commitment to helping rescue good food and get it to neighbors facing hunger.

The Hunger Relief Champion Award is a new way for our agency partners—the nonprofits that help distribute food across San Diego—to recognize the donor site staff who make food rescue possible. Every week, agency partners build meaningful relationships with the grocery store teams that help keep surplus food out of landfills and on tables. This award celebrates those who go above and beyond to support that mission, week after week.

This September 11 marks the 25th anniversary, and 9/11 Day is working to make it the biggest nationwide day of service yet. They need YOUR help to make it happen.

This month marks one year since H.R. 1 became law and brought about historic changes to SNAP.

Here's what we know so far:

🍅Roughly 700 of our neighbors have been dropped from CalFresh already this year
🍅Nearly 48,600 more could be next
🍅Come October, California is on the hook for over $1 BILLION to keep the program funded

The big picture: most people use food assistance for a short stretch after a layoff or an unexpected expense. Cuts to programs result in that safety net disappearing when families need it most.

We're urging a two-year delay in the cost shift so states can prepare. In the meantime, we're not going anywhere.
