This is totally unacceptable and sadly, normal.

After a devastating natural disasters, people often receive "food relief packages" that consist of complete processed junk.

Sharing from our friend, Michelle Orozco:
As a nutrition professional, this breaks my heart. Just like Haiti with their clay ‘cookies’.
Please consider continuing your monetary contributions to organizations that actually care about the quality of relief they provide. Have a higher standard, FEMA. Here are two suggestions:

SuperFood Drive's vision statement is to help "transform local food drives, national food banks and global humanitarian aid into providers of nutrient dense non-perishable foods"... HEALTHY (real) food is a basic human need and right. Perhaps the biggest push back we can have is with our own dollars: we have to stop supporting "food" manufacturers who create ultra processed products and call it food.

People in Puerto Rico have stared sharing photos of their FEMA-sent food packages and the items they are receiving have left many displeased.

41 million people face hunger in America today and yet we are throwing away 1/3 of our FRESH food supply away due to cosmetic reasons, our expectations, and attitude towards food. The negative implications extend beyond harming our hungry citizens, but it also strongly impacts our environment. It's time we stop wasting perfectly good food! Stay tuned for ways Europe is saving their "ugly" produce and what companies are helping in saving them.

This paper highlights an important step towards connecting the dots between food and health.

Bravo to our friend Amanda Schultz Brochu of the San Diego Hunger Coalition for research and work to integrate training about nutrition insecurity into medical education and include food security screening questions at health care centers.

"Although medical education routinely teaches the importance of obtaining a social history, which sometimes includes a dietary history, we have not traditionally taught medical students, residents, or physicians to ask patients if they have enough food to eat, much less how to ask that sensitive question. Patients are unlikely to bring up the inability to provide food for their families due to shame, stigma, and social norms, as this has not been an issue typically addressed in the health care setting. With providers and patients both unlikely to discuss food insecurity, this has been an under-recognized and under-treated issue in medical care."

The Nutrition Pantry Program helps feeding sites like food pantries to Give the Gift of Health! We love hearing feedback like what Wesley Community Services Center shares: "not only do we make better nutritional choices in our menus...our guests are making better choices for themselves" that's some successful behavioral economics!

Thank you SuperFood Drive for the acknowledgment . We started this a year ago with your help. Now, not only do we make better nutritional choices in our menus, but our guests are making better choices for themselves.

URGENT HEALTHY FOOD NEEDS FOR SONOMA COUNTY FIRE VICTIMS:

Redwood Empire Food Bank is in dire need of ready-to-eat, non-perishable foods that we can provide to the evacuation centers immediately. These foods should be easy to open and easy to eat - many shelters do not have kitchens for heating and preparing food. Please do not bring any glass containers or anything perishable.

In traumatic situations, our immune systems become compromised so it is very supportive to receive HEALTHY foods and beverages. While candy or cookies might bring temporary sugar highs, it is not the most supportive to people surviving devastation.

Healthy Suggestions:
- whole grain crackers
- shelf stable hummus (non-refrigerated)
- healthy granola bars (whole grains, limit added sugars)
- single serving beverages (coconut water, 100% juice, non-dairy milks)
- single serving trail mix (nuts and seeds, dried fruit)
- low sodium soups with POP lid (no can-opener necessary)
- canned tuna or salmon with POP lid

THANK YOU for GIVING THE GIFT OF HEALTH

At 9 years old with a 40-pound cabbage, she started a project to feed the hungry. Now at 18, she's leading a nationwide movement.

Attention Bay Area Hunger Groups: please add your information to this map!

This tool (to be officially launched in the fall) is intended to make it easier for individuals, businesses, and organizations with surplus food to find your organization and donate their excess food! Currently, this isn’t an easy or straightforward task and can be time-consuming to find a group or organization that accepts the food people may have on hand. CropMobster is working to fix that!

Get on the map! San Francisco Bay Area groups and organizations that receive donations of food to feed people in need are invited to take our survey and be found on our free listing on the county-wide Food Recovery & Donation Map. This tool (to be officially launched in the fall) is intended to make...
