OYSU - California

OYSU - California OYSU promotes and advocates for the rights of the youth and children that have been displaced due to the conflict and live in every single continent.

Ogaden Youth & Student Union of California was established to raise awareness and educate the people of California about the systematic humanitarian crisis and the gross human rights violations the Meles Zanawi regime of Ethiopia is committing against the The Ogaden Youth and Students Union (OYSU) is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation established in Denmark in June -27-2010- to advocate f

or the rights of the youth, student and children in the Diaspora and the Ogaden. Furthermore, OYSU monitors, reports and educates international agencies of the violations and abuses the youth and children are facing due to the lack of resources and opportunities in their homeland. Ogaden Youth and Students Union was founded on the fundamental principle that all human beings are born equal and has a right to live in peace, dignity and freedom, regardless of race, ethnicity, and religion, gender, belief xenophobia or other forms of both overt and covert discrimination. This firm stance has been reinforced by more than sixty years of suffering of the Ogaden people who had been denied all fundamental Human Rights by the successive Ethiopian regimes, since

the Ogaden was transferred to Ethiopia in 1948. These regimes delegated the ruling of the Ogaden to the occupation army of Ethiopia, which violated the Human Rights of the Ogaden people with impunity and deliberately marginalised the Somali people, which resulted in depopulation, underdevelopment and exodus of more than a million Ogaden Somalis to all parts of the world. Vision:

Learning about the Ogaden values, sacrifice, our history and revive and maintain Ogaden culture. Engages in critical and thought provoking discussions and lectures on relevant national topics with the aim of raising political and ideological awareness of the youth through forums, seminars
and other methods.

The Ideology of Colonization & the Hope of Freedom in the Ogaden:

"Colonization is based on the doctrine of cultural hierarchy and supremacy. The theory of colonialism is the domination by a metropolitan center which rules a distant territory through the implanting of settlements. There is a destruction of the cultural values and ways of life."

colonization of the - is exactly this. The marginalization of the and the subjugation of its people continues to remain the same.

There is no regime change in , continues to rule the country.

Decolonization has not taken place, the same people that have been repressed continue to live in repression.

Self-Determination is the only key to ending decades of human rights violations and dire humanitarian, economic, and political crises in the Ogaden and elsewhere in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia's cycle of authoritarianism stems from its colonial roots impeded in its system of governance and basic identity as a nation-state.

The colonial administration in established, supported, financed, selected, and administered by EPRDF is no different from the previous ones that have murdered thousands of Somalis in the region; Nor do they hold the best interest of the people at heart.

This is becoming more and more prevalent everyday as we are witnessing millions of dollars being looted by the leaders of the colonial administration in Jigjiga as millions of people are struggling with starvation, and some even dying from lack of water and other basic resources.

These difficulties that ensued from decades of human rights violations and Ethiopian colonization of the Ogaden region remains the same. Many believed the new colonial administrative regime established in Jigjiga would bring change, nevertheless fundamental change has not taken place many of the leadership remains intact from the previous Abdi Iley regime, and corruption remains widespread as a humanitarian crisis continues to cripple the region.

We urge the intellectuals, business and political leaders of the Ogaden region to stand up to the status-quo and challenge this system of Ethiopian colonization placed upon the region for decades. The ideology of colonialism is at play in the Ogaden and anti-colonial elements in the Ogaden like the have an obligation to speak up against the ruling class crippling the Somali people and robbing them of the political and economic hopes, aspirations and desires of living in total freedom and exercising their fundamental right of self-determination.

“Jail Ogaden is unthinkable. From the moment you are put there until the moment you are released, you do not know if you are alive or dead. You are tortured and humiliated day and night, you are starved, [and] you can’t sleep because there’s so many people.”
—42-year-old Mohamed who spent five years without charge in Jail Ogaden, August 2017

This report describes a brutal and relentless pattern of abuse, torture, r**e, and humiliation, with little access to medical care, family, lawyers, or even at times to food. The prison’s security forces, including the Somali Region’s notorious paramilitary force, the Liyu police, are implicated...

Her name is TAYSIIR UMAR, she was 18 years old and she was killed yesterday in her hometown of Qabridahar by Abdi Iley’s regime in Jigjiga as a retaliation for the members of her families role and advocacy against the repression Abdi Iley is continuously waging against the civilian population in the region.

The Ethiopian government continues to turn a blind eye and in most cases is promoting these gross human rights violations including the extrajudicial killings, r**e, torture, and mass displacement.

The killing of this young women (TAYSIIR) comes at a time where protests against Abdi Iley have recently been taking place in many parts of the province, such as Siiti, Fafaan, Jaraar, and Shabele. Hundreds of people came out today in protest in the town of Qabridahar where TAYSIIR was killed by the militias loyal to Abdi Iley.

The situation in the region is now dire, we are urging both the Ethiopian government and the international community to immediately remove Abdi Iley from the regional presidency and hold him accountable. If he continues this campaign of intimidation based on the gross human rights violations that he is continuously committing, it is evident the crisis will spread and further destabilize other regional states of Ethiopia and the entire Horn of Africa.

Self-Determination is the only solution to Ethiopia’s cycle of oppression and ethnic conflict.
