Apply Now for the Mosaic Project Cohorts
The next phase of NCTE’s partnership with the Library of Congress focuses on primary sources from California, Texas, and rural communities
English language arts teachers in the country’s two most populous states as well as rural communities nationwide are invited to apply for a unique opportunity to engage in the Mosaic Project, an exciting expansion of NCTE’s partnership with the Library of Congress and its Teaching with Primary Sources project.

This project will engage educators in California, Texas, and rural US communities in cohorts where they will use primary sources as a lens to explore the histories and literary contributions of these states and communities. The cohorts will identify how items in the Library’s online collection of primary sources directly relate to learning objectives in English language arts. They will develop resources highlighting cross-curricular connections in ELA and social studies and, importantly, these resources will be made widely available to support ELA teachers across the country.

Teachers and leaders in California, Texas, and any rural community in the United States may apply to participate by May 21, 2025. Classroom teachers are especially encouraged to apply. Letters of support for this project came from NCTE’s well established affiliates: California Association of Teachers of English (CATE) and Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA), both of which involve substantial numbers of teachers. This work will also highlight the work of The Rural Assembly on English Literacy and Language Education (TRAELLE), which shares a professional commitment to rural students, teachers, issues, and academic materials. The Mosaic Project will yield rich cross-curricular touchpoints that result in a multi-faceted resource for teachers across preK-12 classrooms everywhere.

Each applicant must be prepared to engage in two virtual all-cohort meetings between June and September, two additional cohort meetings as needed, and asynchronous work to create 10 cross-curricular lesson plans each. Participants who complete the project by established deadlines will receive a $1,000 stipen

CATE Connects is 30 days away! Have you registered for the session?

Reading Resistance: Using TribalCrit and Indigenous Lens in the High School Classroom

November is Native American Heritage Month; this session is a timely workshop that addresses the skill of reading texts critically, interrogating them for elements of colonial mindsets and erasure that distort Indigenous peoples and histories. This session will begin with an overview of how Danielle developed a tool (based on the work of Deborah Appleman) for examining texts through an Indigenous lens. However, our reading should not stop there; an essential action is praxis—taking steps to combat erasure and surface the silences in texts by surfacing and incorporating Indigenous voices, histories, and perspectives. Attendees will have hands-on time to practice using the tool, as well as an opportunity to explore a unit plan and rich resources.

CATE Presents:

Danielle Witten, a first generation college student, has nearly two decades of teaching experience at the secondary and university levels. She has received the Carlston Award for Outstanding Teachers of America and the 2020 CJMA Nick Ferentinos Award for Advising Excellence. Her pedagogy is guided by the belief that education is a fundamental right and that even in a failing educational system, individual teachers have the capacity to positively impact students’ learning and lives.
