The theme emphasizes unity, inclusion, and love and safety for everyone.

Homer Delawie House #2, 1963

This beautiful home maximizes views of the canyon it is set on and is designed around the preservation of a California Pepper Tree.
The facade is made of western cedar and the use of glass brings the outdoors inside, a theme with mid-century modern architecture. The Master Architect designed this home for his family and extended the house in 1981.
This house earned an Award of Merit from the San Diego Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. It also appeared in the September 2004 issue of San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles Magazine.

Stay tuned on more for this years MHH theme of Mid-Century Modernism!

Did you already know what they were?

Neighborhood gateway pillars like these used to exist throughout California’s early residential developments.

Most disappeared over time.

Mission Hills still has a few quietly standing along Sunset Blvd more than 100 years later.

Mission Hills Heritage honors National Military Appreciation Month and Memorial day this May with local Military History.

Fort Stockton, previously located in San Diego’s Presidio Park, holds important military significance as one of the earliest American defensive positions on the Pacific Coast. Established in the 1830s and later occupied by U.S. forces after the Mexican-American War, the fort helped secure the newly acquired territory of California and protected the strategic harbor of San Diego. It served as a key outpost during a period when the U.S. military presence in the region was still being established.

The fort is named after Commodore Robert F. Stockton and was located just west of the Junipero Serra Museum where the marker stands. Stockton was a U.S. Navy officer who played a major role in the conquest of California during the Mexican-American War. Stockton led naval and ground forces to capture key coastal cities, including San Diego and Los Angeles, helping to bring California under U.S. Control. May is designated as National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) in the United States, passed by congress in 1999 to ensure the nation publicly honors the service, sacrifices, and contributions of the U.S. Armed Forces, veterans, and their families. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for military personnel who died in service, often marked by parades, services, and the unofficial start of summer.

🏡✨ May is National Preservation Month! 🏡✨

We’re celebrating by looking back at one of our Mission Hills Heritage Preservation Award winners. 🏆

Last year, we honored Shawna and Scott Biel for restoring their Mission Hills home to its original Prairie-style spirit. Their journey began in 1999, when they started researching the home’s history and uncovered a photo of its original appearance.

With that inspiration, they carefully removed a 1980s Tuscan-style makeover and later front elevation changes—bringing the home back into harmony with its original design.

The result is a thoughtful, beautiful restoration… and we love it. 💛

🎁 Wrapping up this year's events theme, Spanish Architectural Styles, with one final “gift” 🎁 -- the Ralph M. & Lulu M. Ward Residence.

A stunning example of Spanish Eclectic architecture nestled in north Mission Hills, this beautifully preserved home delivers all the hallmark features we’ve admired throughout the year:

✨ A dramatic parabolic focal window
✨ Clay mission tile roof
✨ A charming octagonal tower
✨ Tiled archway over the driveway
✨ Smooth, white-washed stucco and thick, adobe-inspired forms
✨ Arched windows & recessed medallions

Built in 1927 by realtor Ed Jacobson in the Snyder Tract—originally envisioned as a quaint English village of Tudor houses—the Ward Residence reflects the neighborhood’s shift as buyers embraced Spanish style.

The Wards, its first occupants, lived here nearly two decades. Since the 1960s, the same family has lovingly cared for and preserved it—truly a generational treasure. 🎀✨
