A statement from our Executive Director, Leticia Gomez Franco on the City of San Diego Mayor’s proposal to completely eliminate funding for the arts.

In a time when cultures and voices are being erased we look inwardly to our neighborhoods, our community to protect our right to live and thrive with dignity. The Mayor and City Council must do better - support for the arts is a statement of values and a commitment to a more just future.

“grant funding isn’t just another funding source for nonprofits, — grants keep nonprofits accountable. If you had never heard of BACC, that’s not surprising. We’ve been in San Diego for 50 years, but for the first 45, we were a service organization providing art conservation services to art institutions and their constituents and therefore funded primarily through earned revenue. In 2020, we received our first local grant, $24k from the City of San Diego and in exchange for this, we committed to be of service to San Diegans beyond the transactional fee for service. Those $24k supported the development of BACC’s first education and workforce development programs. The following year, those programs helped us secure grants from state sources, and the next year, a Million-dollar investment from the Mellon Foundation to grow our capacity to be truly of service to our region. Since then and catalyzed by that initial $24k investment from the City of San Diego, BACC has fundraised over 4 million dollars in grant funding, doubled its earned revenue, and tripled its annual operating expenses, — a direct investment in San Diegans.”

We’re excited to introduce the 2026 California Collections Care Training Cohort! 🎉

This year’s cohort brings together 15 collections caretakers from across California, representing community archives, museums, educational institutions, and local governments.

Part of BACC’s California Inclusive Preservation Program (CIPP), this cohort will spend the next eight months learning together through virtual lectures, discussion sessions, and hands-on workshops building practical skills and a strong network of support.

As the program continues to grow, this year’s cohort joins the 2025 participants, whose reflections speak to the impact of CIPP: “CIPP has provided me with hands-on, practical skills, expanded my knowledge, and given me a community to share challenges and questions.”

Now in its second year, CIPP builds on a successful first cycle that reached:
• 212 participants
• 161 organizations
• 77 cities across 22 counties

Together, we’re growing a statewide network of people caring for cultural collections.
We’re honored to work with this incredible group of caretakers and can’t wait to see what unfolds this year. 💛Congratulations to our 2026 cohort!

This gorgeous alabaster sculpture, lovingly titled “The Francy Starr Sculpture” was brought in for a Community Consultation Day, and ended up staying at BACC for treatment! The sculpture was created by the client’s mother, and stood as a symbol of resilience for the family. The sculpture had been displayed outside, so along with the normal weather degradation and grime, the piece had become a hotel for many a creepy crawly. 😱

Our Objects Team was able to clean the sculpture by using both dry and wet cleaning methods. The exploration of treatment options included gel based cleaning approaches, steam cleaning and brushes. The team was successful in removing staining and revealing some of the beautiful marbling that was originally present in the piece. In addition to treating the sculpture, BACC art conservators worked with the client to identify best ways to upkeep and display the piece moving forward, ensuring its preservation for years to come!

Have an object that could use a conservator check-up? Sign up for a free consultation (limited spots available once a month).
