Hello San Diego! It's Hailey here with an update from the pacific north west! I went to my first Washington beekeeping class last night at Washington State University! It looks like beekeeping is going to be a lot different up here. San Diego had the perfect weather for a winter bee home. Up here in Washington mold and verroa mites are going to be my biggest battle it seems. How to keep a hive warm and dry with propper ventilation in the winter??? How to treat for mites in the spring and fall??? And how to follow up on those mite treatments a few days later to make sure they've worked???? I will also be looking into the new and natural mushroom based verroa mite treatments being studied by Paul Stamets at WSU. For now I'll be outside planting my pollinator gardens with lots of purple tansies, fireweed and borage! Gotta plant that bee food before you bring the boxy ladies!
