If you are watching the debates, I hope your children are not. Positive role models for children are difficult to find. "Character," what we have grown to believe defines a person and to whom we are drawn when we find strong morals, has been on short display. How do we bring up our children with strong moral values, when the news is dominated by people, and institutions with values most families would not espouse?

Deeds From The Heart works with families to build character, confidence and self-discipline in children between the ages of 4 and 12. We work with the family, the child and the community in developing these morals and values. We offer life changing experiences for children that awaken their heart and soul.

If you want children with character, confidence and self-discipline, please go to deedsfromtheheart.org and enroll them in one of our programs.

From my heart to yours,

Gabrielle

Why Are Universities Hiring Diversity Directors

Parents, are you aware that Diversity Directors are being hired by Universities and Colleges? Really? When we were growing up, it was a given to include and respect everyone. Today, many Caucasian freshman have never been exposed or friends with Afro-Americans. Likewise, both groups hold certain stereotypes pertaining to Asians. And that is part of the reason why Diversity Directors are hired at Universities and Colleges.

What I see in San Diego, is that people live amongst there own kind of people. And few people branch out. That is one reason why I started Deeds From The Heart. It is to expose young children to host of people who are different than themselves and to do a good deed for them. When kids engage in doing good deeds, they are happier, do better in school and make better decisions about drugs and alcohol. In addition, they build “confidence” and when you have a confidant child, you can be sure they will go through life able to adjust to change and tackle problems that occur more easily. Confidence is what we want to give to our children. So you help build it in your home, and allow us to help you build it, outside your home. That way, when your children are college bound, they will understand diversity and may even be an advocate for it.

Please sign your children up today! Go to Deedsfromtheheart.org. You won’t regret it!!!

If you have children between the ages of 4 and 12, it would help us greatly if you shared what type of programming you would like for them. We are all ears.

Happy Thanksgiving

I want to wish this beautiful community a very Happy Thanksgiving!!! We have so much to be thankful for, including health, brains, friends, family, the environment and living in the USA!!!

I was reading the newspaper, like always do in the morning, and came across an article that caused me to say OMG!!! The title: The ART OF The TABLE. Ok, one would think its about decorating the table, but no. It is about teaching etiquette regarding the Thanksgiving meal to high school students in South Carolina. For the last 16 years, the history teacher has taught her students how to eat a proper Thanksgiving meal. Really?

The article went on to say, that good manners at the table is as antiquated as the rotary telephone. It is not just about setting the table, making it beautiful and not using a phone, it is also about being “respectful” to others. Coming prepared to speak to young people at the table and involving everyone in conversation. Yet, the teacher, shows students how to put a napkin on there lap, chew with their mouths closed, and not come with chewing gum to the table. Didn’t we learn all this growing up?

In August, The Pew Research Center published a study of American attitudes towards the use of cell phones. The findings: 92% of Americans, say they rarely or never turn them off and 88% said that it wasn’t okay to use them at the table. That said, the teacher has found while some students grow up knowing about the finer etiquette of dining, others rarely eat together, even at Thanksgiving. Now, that is the saddest finding of all.

Happy Thanksgiving to All! Just please make sure, your table is engaging and respectful for everyone!! I am very thankful for you!!!!

Lies, Lies and More Lies

Today in the news it was revealed that Russian track and field Olympians were doping and everyone from the coaches, doctors, labs and the International Association of Athletics Federations knew about it. In fact the former President of the Athletics Federations, Lamine Diack, is accused of taking bribes to conceal positive doping tests from the Russian athletics federation!!

This kind of behavior from athletes that are supposed to be role models for our children, is completely disheartening. How do we teach our children not to lie, when TV shows and real life people and organizations lie?

It is a fact that the pressure put on teens in school causes them to lie. A CNN pole has shown that 75% of high school students admit to lying and a whopping 50% think that is ok. These behaviors, despite what parents teach are pervasive. Elementary kids lie and cheat as well.

How do we stop this lying and cheating? I think positive role modeling and talking to your children about the consequences of lying are two of the strongest things parents can do. Because of the doping of Olympic athletes, Russia may be barred from participating in the next Olympics and future competitions. Consequences of lying must be stressed. Also, social action shows kids how lucky they are and has wonderful benefits when done consistently.

This is why Deeds From The Heart works with children between 4 and 12 so that they can experience greater character, confidence and self-discipline. When faced with the situation of lying or telling the truth, we hope they will take the high road. Parents can talk til the cows come out, but other people need to recite the same chorus. The more children hear the same thing from others, the message will sink in. It takes a lot of people to build the “inner self” of children.

Please start today and enroll your kids in Deeds From The Heart programs!! You will be happy you did!.

Why Children Need Time To “Daydream”

If imagination is the precursor to creativity, then children need lots of time to daydream. Einstein didn’t develop his brilliant theories in a lab, rather, they were developed through “visual imagination”. Imagine how many children could inspire new theories or new inventions, if they had time in school and outside of school to “daydream”. I am daydreaming about this now.

The first school to ever open was in Boston in 1635. It was a school for boys until 1972, when girls were admitted. Rote type of learning has been around for hundreds of years. It used to be that children played outside after school and didn’t have hours of homework. Growing up, we had lots of time to “daydream”. But today, our children are busy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is no time for quiet imagination, boredom, just being with parents doing nothing. The problem with this is that we are stifling our children’s creativity.

Why is creativity important? Because without it, we wouldn’t solve technological, scientific, psychological, medicinal or any other new frontiers. Imagination lives within each of us, and it is our responsibility to unleash it within our children’s minds.

At Deeds From The Heart, everything we do is experiential. Yes, we build values in children, but we also touch their souls and open up their minds to a world beyond themselves and their circumstances. How great would you be if you gave your children this gift. The gift of knowing they could make a difference in other people’s lives. The gift of knowing what it means to be respectful, appreciative, honest and empathetic. The gift of confidence, strong character and self-discipline. Yes, we help you build this at Deeds From The Heart. Who knows, your child might be inspired by what we visually show them. They might become the next Einstein!!! Now imagine that!
