On Saturday morning, WMFO staff crossed the border into Playas de Tijuana, Baja California to join Kilómetro Uno’s 100th Beach Cleanup — and what a milestone it was.

Together with 500+ volunteers, we removed an astonishing 3,600 lbs of trash from the coastline — a huge impact! 💪♻️ We found everything from broken bottle caps and microfibers tangled in seaweed, to a stranded boat now embedded in the sand, and even a decomposed tractor wheel — a vivid reminder of the litter our oceans endure.

And the celebration continued, Kilometro Uno merch and ocean conservation books provided by WMFO were raffled off — most importantly, a renewed commitment to protecting our shared ocean. Because conservation doesn’t stop at borders. 🌎💙

A huge congratulations to our friends and partners at Kilometro Uno,
here’s to community, collaboration, and 100 more cleanups!

While attending the Whale Tales Conference, we were deeply moved by Cheryl and Nick Dean’s film, "The Right Whale: Tales of Resilience and Hope".

This documentary takes viewers across the globe into the lives of right whales, revealing their intelligence, grace, resilience, and heartbreaking vulnerability.

More than a film, it is a powerful call to protect these extraordinary beings before it’s too late.

🎬 If you have the chance to watch The Right Whale, do.

From La Jolla to Hawaiʻi 🌊🌺

WMFO’s Mary Munk, Paula Selby, and Maggie Velazquez traveled to Hawaiʻi for the 25th Annual Whale Tales Conference presented by Whale Trust— a powerful gathering dedicated to ocean education and conservation.

One unforgettable highlight? Setting sail with legendary oceanographer Sylvia A. Earle and fellow ocean advocates, followed by snorkeling in the breathtaking Olowalu Hope Spot — a place of extraordinary marine biodiversity and protection. 💙

On another day, they returned to sea and were rewarded with sightings of magnificent humpback whales — a humbling reminder of why this work matters.

🐋 Until next time Whale Tales!

What a whale of a day at the San Diego Symphony🐋

We joined the magic of Peter and the Wolf, where the audience experienced the world premier of Right Whale, Wrong Letter, a heartfelt piece about Robley, a North Atlantic Right Whale.

We had the honor to collaborate with Becky Aitken and Art Teacher Jayne Barnett + her talented students from Steel Canyon High School in pre-concert ocean fun activities like; making wristbands, exploring whale food, touching baleen, and measuring the size of an adult Right Whale vs. a one year old Right Whale.

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity and collaboration. 🌊

In 1966, the American Meteorological Society awarded Walter H. Munk the Sverdrup Gold Medal for advancing our understanding of the ocean’s movements and their relationship to the atmosphere.

The medal honored work that helped explain things like:
🌊 how waves travel across entire ocean basins
💨 how the ocean and air constantly influence each other
🧠 and how science can help us understand motion, patterns, and change

Walter's life work came from paying attention long enough to understand the conversation.
A reminder — Curiosity is useful. Attention is powerful. And understanding begins by noticing what’s moving around us.
