Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo members are men and women who live or work or are involved in Rancho Bernardo or nearby communities, including Poway, 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain, Sabre Springs, Rancho Penasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Escondido, and other areas near the RB region of San Diego, California. Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo is a part of Rotary International, an organization of business and prof

essional leaders united worldwide to conduct humanitarian projects, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and work toward world understanding and peace. Rotary is the world's first service club, founded February 23, 1905. The Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Avenues of Service
Based on the Object of Rotary, the Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

-Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.
-Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
-Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
-International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.
-Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs. The Four-Way Test
The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:

Of the things we think, say or do

1.Is it the TRUTH?
2.Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Many of us were honored to participate in Operation Flags For Vets on Memorial Day weekend. It's a powerful reminder of the need to honor those who who are no longer with us. We are also proud that District 5340 has sponsored this event for 3 years and hopefully into the future.

Great article in our local Rotary newsletter about yesterday’s Operation Flags For Vets at Miramar National Cemetery

With appreciation in their hearts, a breeze in the air, and the sun warm on their backs, Rotarians from across District 5340 gathered at Miramar National Cemetery to honor the Americans who gave their lives so that we may live in freedom. What began in quiet reflection soon became a powerful disp....

Several RB Rotarians and their families and friends participated today in Operation Flags For Vets at Miramar National Cemetery. Along with 550 volunteers we placed American flags at 23,000 gravesites in honor of our fallen military heroes at this District 5340 sponsored event. It was an inspiring, moving and uplifting event.

Happy Thursday everyone! Last week Thursday (5/14), we had the pleasure of hosting our annual RYLA night to celebrate the juniors that we sent to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards every year. While not every RYLArian could join us, we had the pleasure of dining with 10 of the campers, along with their guests, and one RYLA alumni who we sponsored last year! Students answered questions from Rotarians about their experience at camp, their leadership within their community, and what being a leader means to them. Special shoutout to our incredible RYLA committee; this dinner and all of our contributions to RYLA would not be possible without you.

In club news, we will be hosting our annual Flags for Vets event this year leading up to Memorial Day. If you are interested in volunteering to honor our veterans by placing flags at the National Cemetery in Point Loma, please reach out to Mike Fuqua for more details. Finally, we had the immense honor of awarding the Paul Harris Fellow to our club's youngest ever recipient: our Social Media Manager, Alyza Sitts-Leyva. Alyza has been managing our social media accounts since January 2025 and is about to graduate this year form Mt. Carmel High School. Over the past year and a half, we've had an incredible time getting to know Alyza better and seeing her dedication to Rotary's values through our social media, her participation as a RYLA alumni, role as Assistant District Governor on the Interact District Council, and being a recipient of our Rotary scholarship have exemplified to us that our future is in incredible hands.

This past week was focused on our club's support to the military. On Wednesday Patrick Chaffee and Mike Fuqua attended the quarterly NCO of the quarter ceremony at MCAS Miramar as a civilian sponsor organization and provided gift cards to awardees. Then at our meeting on Thursday evening our guest speaker was Col. Eric Hermann, CO of MCAS Miramar who provided us with an excellent overview of the base activities to include the annual Miramar air show. Additionally, we recognized two recent honor graduates of the Corporals Course sponsored by the 3rd Marine Air Wing with ceremonial swords. It was an inspiring week.

We gathered this afternoon at Koi Zen Cellars Craft Winery to remember our beloved member, past president Don Glover. Don, along with his wife Cathy, was a key member of our club for many years. He was energetic, dedicated, and a continual force for good. Don was the epitome of a person of action and we miss him every day. We have established a scholarship fund in his honor as he was very dedicated to our youth programs. If you'd like to donate please visit our website at https://www.rbrotary.org/page/foundation-overview and mark your donation for the Don Glover Scholarship.

Happy Monday, all! This past Thursday (4/23), we had the pleasure of hosting Susan Pacheco, a Master Gardener and Winemaker. She has grown wine grapes and bottled wine from them successfully from her vineyard in her very own front yard in La Costa. Susan gave us a tutorial on growing grapes from scratch and extensive info on gardening resources in San Diego. We all hope to grow grapes even half as good as hers!

In club news, we heard a "Who Am I" from Ayhan Olgun, one of our new red badge members, before he received his Gold Badge as a full-fledged member. Congratulations to Ayhan! We were also reminded of our annual RYLA meeting on May 14th and an upcoming club visit to the Navy Seal Museum on May 28th. Finally, our annual Operation Flags for Vets at Miramar National Cemetery will be held on May 23rd and 26th, so please come volunteer to support our vets! I hope you all have a fantastic week!
