Atty. Chel Diokno Talked About Importance of Martial Law Museum in San Diego Forum.

Chel was the guest speaker in a forum dubbed as “Remembrance, Resilience and Resistance in the Time of the Marcos Restoration” held at the UC San Diego Park and Market campus last Friday, November 3, 2023.

The event, sponsored and organized by the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance – San Diego (APALA San Diego) and by the UC San Diego Labor Center, is part of the North American tour of Chel Diokno to raise funds for the Bantayog ng mga Bayani (Monument of Heroes), a museum dedicated to the victims of Martial Law under the Marcos dictatorship. Bantayog is located at Quezon City, Philippines.

The central feature of the Bantayog museum and memorial is the granite “Wall of Remembrance” on which are inscribed the names of the martyrs and heroes who were victims of the abuses of the Marcos dictatorship.

Chel's speaking tour is organized by LELO (Legacy of Equality, Leadership, and Organizing), a non-profit based in Seattle, WA and Akbayan-USA. Other sponsors of the San Diego forum are the Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego (FALSD), Law Offices of Ian M Seruelo, Malaya Movement San Diego and Villa Manila Restaurant. The objective of his US tour is to raise funds for Bantayog ng mga Bayani (Monument of Heroes), a museum dedicated to the victims of Martial Law under the Marcos dictatorship. It also aims to continue discussion and education about the truth about the Marcos regime and how this history is important to remember, in light of the continuous effort by the dictator's son, Ferdinand "Bong-bong" Marcos, Jr., who was recently elected as the President of the Philippines, to distort and revise the country's history. Moreover, labor leaders and activists continue to be targets of extra-judicial killings in the Philippines.

A few days ago UCD Custodians were notified of a new policy that would require them to work on holidays. Workers immediately banded together and delegated their bosses yesterday afternoon in an attempt to meet about the proposed change. Management hid and refused to meet. But by this morning, workers received news that the new policy will be rescinded, and workers will be able to enjoy the holidays with their families! 👊 Proving once again, when we fight, we win!

There’s nothing spookier to management than an organized workplace. This , organize!

Another major endorsement! California State Controller Betty Yee for California! "San Diego's outdated ban on project labor agreements jeopardizes the city’s continued eligibility for state infrastructure funds. As the state's chief fiscal officer, I can assure San Diegans' support for Measure D will preserve vital state funding your city needs to invest in your neighborhoods and prepare for the future. I urge you to vote Yes on Measure D."
