**ADOPTED** Congratulations, Canyon!
After 72 days, Canyon found his family, and as per usual, they are super special folks.

After a bad experience giving a shelter dog a trial run, Meyli and Tom approached adoption with thoughtfulness, patience, and a definite desire for some training to be included next time. When the shelter dog they brought home started destroying the house, breaking out of crates, and soiling everywhere except outside, their impression of adoption was starting to sour. This scenario could have easily been the case if Canyon was adopted from the shelter in the condition we found him in, and he almost didn’t get this chance - euthanasia was being discussed for this kid if a rescue exit couldn’t be found.

Canyon, and his new owner’s previous experience, are EXACTLY why our program exists. Second-hand dogs so often need TRAINING in order to be successful, and too many never get the chance in overwhelmed shelter environments. Without organizations to pull, foster, train and properly prepare these dogs, they end up returned, and with more baggage.

Our hearts are full seeing this kid’s full circle moment, and knowing he is already so loved and wanted. Thank you for adopting in a trained dog from ! And thank you, SCRAPS, for trusting our rescue partnership to have what Canyon needed to succeed.

Hierarchy, hierarchy, hierarchy…. šŸ˜‚

Whenever I dare discuss the value, the mechanisms, and the undeniable realities of hierarchy in dog training, I inevitably receive much needed guidance from a certain sector of the training world.

Who might these folks be you ask?

Ahhh, the force-free, reactivity and behavior mod specialists who often don’t actually work with dogs hands-on (virtual only please!), who beseech me to shut my trap and to read the ā€œliteratureā€ (lots of it!) on proper training and learning theory.

How nice it must be to live in a world where 1/ you don’t actually touch the dogs and still get paid, 2/ you can pretend that trash literature overrides observable reality, and 3/ you are so completely indoctrinated that you have all the arrogance and none of the humility required to actually help dogs.

If you are one of those who deny that hierarchical dynamics are in play between dogs and dogs, and dogs and humans (and everywhere else), I’ve got nothing for you. You’ve been so completely brainwashed that there’s nothing to be done.

Luckily for you there’s plenty of delusional owners who also despise the messiness, opportunism, and conflict that exists in nature—and who subscribe to emotionally appealing fairytale-based dog training. And they’ll happily pay you for the yarns you spin for them.

As for this page, I will continue to share the non-Disney-fied version of dog training, and nature. It might not feel as warm and fuzzy, but strangely it keeps working, over and over and over. :)

**ADOPTED** Happy, happy , Tati!!

This is SUPER special, because the little man who just gained a playmate is somebody I get to spend a lot of time with, and he was adopted too. 🄹🄰

The opportunity to match my buddy and his mom with a sweet doggo, as well as the long term ability to contribute to Tati’s development, is pretty perfect if you ask me.

There was just something about Tati that made me think of this family, and sure enough… when we got them all together earlier in the week, it was an instant click.
Two youngsters will wear each other out, and a mama who deserves a cuddle buddy at the end of each exhausting day will have a wiling participant as well.

Thank you Indie Rescuers and Animal Rescuers Without Borders (ARWOB) for your help with Tati.

Happy trails, E, A, and T! Thanks for choosing rescue!

It’s been a great week getting to know these two new arrivals, who will be trained and very soon! Follow for more of their journey and announcements when they’re ready/adopted, but here’s a bit of backstory…

Vinny is a 6 year , crate trained, house broken, walks well on leash, and is becoming trained to resolve his dog reactivity (he’s already a thousand percent better about that). Vinny wants to be the only dog in the home as he is quite nervous and defense around dogs, but he’s mellow, quiet, charming and such an easy keeper otherwise.

Vinny has been through a lot this year due to being abandoned at a shelter, then saved by our friends at , where he received a TON of expensive medical care to make sure he’s was healthy and cleared for placement. Unfortunately, Vinny then needed lengthy treatment for his kennel-cough-turned-pneumonia (an all to common cost of shelter stays!), and his leash reactivity rendered him a harder case for their comfort in foster care. Boston Buddies has always understood the importance of training investment in those dogs who otherwise won’t be successful, and we are grateful they sponsored Vinny to transfer to our program where we have the skills to get him the rest of the way HOME. Give some@love, they truly went above and beyond financially for this guy. šŸ™ŒšŸ»

Connie is a 2 year old mix who is crate trained, house broken, loves dogs, kids and belly rubs. Connie is learning to walk politely on leash instead of dragging you like a CrossFit weight pulling competitor, and she’ll be fully e collar trained as well to give her off leash freedom. Connie is absolutely gorgeous, definitely pushy (see also: FRENCHIE/HEELER), has prey drive, and would probably be a pain around cats. This girl is a little w***e for affection and would love a human who’s into cuddles, which she gladly initiates by flopping onto her back as soon as she meets you.

Feel free to reach out if you’re drawn to either of these pups, and you can find our formal adoption application/process info on our website at www.hope2k9.com.

Congratulations, Emo (formerly Rayo), who totally hit the jackpot with this rescue networking outcome. šŸ™ŒšŸ» šŸ‡²šŸ‡½ āœˆļø šŸ”ļø šŸ” ā¤ļø 🐶

From the Mexico streets - where Indie Rescuers are pulling off miracles on a shoestring - to a airplane ride up the coast and into our shmancy Board and Train program, Emo became a second-hand dog with SKILLS… a lot more doors open for dogs with skills.

Once you’ve adopted a dog with training, it’s hard to go any other way. I’m so honored to have a friend (and two-time returning adopter), to send Emo off to, and he’ll have a brother to adventure with once he’s gets home.

Callie and Dominic, thank you for going above and beyond to retrieve this pup from many states away, and we sure hope Emo brings you many happy moments and memories!

Couldn’t agree more.

We ARE a rescue, we help shelter dogs DAILY, we also believe in preservation breeders.

The issue is access (it’s too easy to get dogs from less than stellar sources), and education/impulsivity, with a giant lack of follow through - commitment should be for life.

Truly quality breeders are a small percentage of the population, but I’ve know several and love working with them. Reputable and ethical breeders set their puppies up for success, dumping hundreds of hours into conditioning confident and healthy dogs who will make great ambassadors for the breed. Many are actually involved in rescue of their specialized breed, and most aren’t making money, they’re producing for the standard to own, show, and compete with themselves.

You won’t see us post ā€œadopt don’t shop,ā€ as we believe you *should* be shopping, where adopting or buying, and everyone should be shopping responsibly.

āš–ļø THE PEOPLE vs. RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS
Now appearing in the Court of Facebook, where feelings are evidence, memes are research and the loudest person automatically becomes an expert.

Attorney: State your occupation.

Breeder: Preservation breeder.

Attorney: So—you breed puppies for money?

Breeder: Absolutely. I recently spent $4,000 to produce $3,000 worth of puppies. I’ll be ordering my yacht as soon as I finish scrubbing diarrhea off the laundry-room wall.

Attorney: Shelters are overflowing because people like you keep producing dogs!

Breeder: Of course. My health-tested puppies—sold with lifetime support and a return-to-breeder agreement—personally drove themselves to every shelter in America.

Meanwhile, Billy Bob’s fourth accidental litter is listed online beside a used refrigerator, but apparently he’s just an innocent victim of unfenced love.

Attorney: Everyone should stop shopping and adopt mutts!

Breeder: Brilliant. Let’s stop deliberately breeding healthy dogs to written standards and allow genetics to operate like an unsupervised trailer-park reunion.

Attorney: Purebred dogs aren’t necessary.

Breeder: Neither is Wi-Fi, but I bet you’d start swinging a folding chair if yours disappeared.

Attorney: Breed standards are just vanity.

Breeder: Yes, those silly little details like structure, sound movement, predictable size, stable temperament and the ability to perform the job the breed was created to do. Completely useless—until your ā€œsmall, calm apartment dogā€ reaches 87 pounds, eats the drywall and attempts to herd the upstairs neighbors.

Attorney: Mixed-breed dogs make wonderful pets!

Breeder: They absolutely can. Nobody said otherwise. But if every responsible breeder quits, eventually every dog becomes a brown mystery named Buddy.

Buddy’s DNA results will say 6% Chihuahua, 14% Husky, 20% livestock guardian, 9% terrier and 51% ā€œclose the gate and pray.ā€

Attorney: If everyone adopted, shelters would eventually be empty.

Breeder: Wonderful! And after responsible breeders are gone, where will future dogs come from?

Attorney: Shelters.

Breeder: And where will shelters get them?

Attorney: From people who breed dogs.

Breeder: So your master plan requires people to keep breeding dogs irresponsibly so you’ll have dogs to rescue—while attacking the people breeding them responsibly?

Attorney: That’s not what I said.

Breeder: It’s exactly what you said. You just wrapped it in a bumper sticker and hoped nobody would apply basic arithmetic.

Attorney: Responsible breeders should simply stop.

Breeder: Then say goodbye to predictable breeds. No more carefully preserved Labradors, Poodles, German Shepherds, Chinese Cresteds or hundreds of other breeds developed for specific purposes.

Attorney: We’ll still have dogs.

Breeder: Certainly. We’ll have Buddy—part hound, part cattle dog, part sofa assassin and entirely capable of clearing a six-foot fence before your morning coffee.

Attorney: So you hate rescue dogs?

Breeder: No. That tired accusation is what people use when their argument has collapsed like a discount lawn chair at a family reunion.

Rescue a dog. Purchase from a responsible breeder. Do both. Just stop pretending one good choice requires publicly flogging the other.

Attorney: I’m offended.

Breeder: Being offended isn’t the same as being correct. It just means the truth arrived without bubble wrap.

āš–ļø CASE DISMISSED

Reason: The prosecution presented one slogan, three memes, no understanding of genetics and a halo tilted so far sideways it nearly struck the court reporter.

Adopt responsibly. Shop responsibly. Commit for life.

And please stop acting like purebred dogs grow wild behind the shelter and are harvested every spring by rescue fairies. šŸ˜‚šŸ¾
