Congratulations to our 2025-2026 Kyoto Scholarship recipients from Tijuana! We were so thrilled to have 150 students from Mexico participate in our March Symposium. In Arts and Philosophy, the 2025 Kyoto Prize laureate is Carol Gilligan, who pioneered the framework known as the “ethic of care,” while revealing the distortions and limitations of conventional psychological theories pertaining to women’s thoughts and behaviors. Her work offers a new academic foundation for addressing global societal challenges like women’s empowerment and the welfare of the elderly and disabled.

In Advanced Technology, the 2025 Kyoto Prize laureate is Shun-ichi Amari, who has been recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to neural network dynamics, learning theory, and the creation of “information geometry,” which provided the mathematical foundation for the development of practical algorithms. His research has been pivotal to the evolution of today’s artificial intelligence.

In Basic Sciences, the 2025 Kyoto Prize laureate is Azim Surani, whose work demonstrated how male and female mammalian genomes receive distinct imprints during germ cell development. Genomic imprinting introduced a novel concept to Mendelian genetics and is now a fundamental principle in the life sciences. His research has contributed to developmental biology and epigenetics, along with a wide range of life science fields including physiology, regenerative medicine, reproductive medicine and plant science.

The Kyoto Prize Symposium is a celebration honoring the 2025 Kyoto Prize Laureates. The Kyoto Prize is Japan’s highest private award for global achievement, where three individuals are chosen to represent their achievements in advanced technology, arts and philosophy, and basic sciences.

UC San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene University will be hosting a series of presentations by the laureates this March 11-12. University events are free and open to the public.
