DĂ­a de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead), is a Mexican holiday where families set up vibrant ofrendas (altars) to welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. The holiday is traced back to indigenous groups who believed in a conviviality between the living and the dead. Unlike other cultures, death is seen as something beautiful and as continuation of life. Over time this has mixed with Catholic church commemoration, as All Souls Day, but continues to be celebrated among non-Catholics as well. On October 31, families across Latin America begin to welcome back the spirits of relatives from the afterlife so they can rejoin their families on November 1 and 2. Please join USD La Raza Law Students to celebrate Dia De Los Mu***os. Our ofrenda will be set up on November 1 and 2 at the 2nd floor of Warren Hall. Join us either day between 12:00 and 12:50 to celebrate our ancestors and learn more about this beautiful celebration.

Con Ganas Martes: My name is Alec Z Drachenberg Mora. I am the 2L rep for La Raza at USD. I grew up in San Diego/Tijuana, and my whole family is from Mexico.

Through my Mexican upbringing, family was always tremendously important. My family taught me the values of community, service to others, and respect for the Earth. Those values have guided my dream of becoming a lawyer for as long as I can remember. In college, I interned for a law firm, and eventually that turned into a full-time job. There, I was offered the opportunity to take a tribal bar exam, and I accepted the challenge. Being admitted to a tribal bar was an honor, and that was the last impetus for me to apply to USD Law! I'm glad that I did :)

I plan to serve as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps, with a second long term-goal of advocating for tribal environmental interests. In the meantime, I love being involved this community! 🇲🇽🇺🇸

La Raza is excited to welcome Foley & Lardner for a special panel event. Foley & Lardner is an international corporate law firm in the health, science, technology, and manufacturing fields.

This panel will feature Foley & Lardner attorneys discussing on-campus interviews and the big law recruiting process. The panel will be followed by a networking event where lunch will be provided. All are welcome!

Con Ganas Martes: our feature today comes from our Treasurer Chris Rodriguez. Hi everyone, I’m Chris Rodriguez- I grew up in socal for most of my life, but I just came back from living in Germany for the past three years working as a civilian on a military base. I like hiking, reading, working out and knew I was going to be a lawyer after watching the show “Matlock” back when I was eight. I am a second-gen Latino, my dad immigrated from Mexico way back when. Fun fact about me, I can teach you how to solve a Rubik’s cube.
