πŸŽ‰ Happy 143rd Birthday to the San Diego Public Library!

On July 15, 1882, San Diego's "literary resort" opened its doors for the first time! Just weeks earlier, five elected trustees met at Bryant Howard's home on B Street to found the San Diego Public Library. Among them was a young 32-year-old dry goods store owner named George W. Marston - the youngest trustee but destined to become one of San Diego's greatest civic leaders! πŸ“š

These visionaries secured FREE rooms above the Commercial Bank at 5th & G Streets. Back then, you could only read books IN the library - no borrowing allowed!

From those humble beginnings to serving over 5 million visitors today, look how far this incredible system has come! The Library Foundation SD is proud to continue this tradition of community investment that leaders like Marston began 143 years ago.
