May 1st to May 3rd Feminist Peace Summit Recommended by Activist San Diego Denver, Colorado, can attend virtually. We are convening the Feminist Peace Summit in the face of intensifying militarization and climate devastation at home and abroad. A reorientation toward feminist principles is necessary to move U.S. foreign policy away from forever war. A feminist peace agenda must be rooted in the lived experiences of those most harmed by war and militarism and include the leadership of communities of color and immigrant communities who have led anti-militarism struggles for decades. We seek to reorient US policymaking away from militarism and endless wars toward an ethic of human security grounded in justice, peace, and ecological sustainability. We need your voice, your posters, and your dedication to seeing an end to the marine mammal captivity industry. Information and education is vital - our signs tell the stories and we will have flyers to hand out. Please feel free to make your own posters. Please leave companion animals at home. We will meet at the corner of Sea World Drive and Sea World Way. There is parking at South Shores parking lot. Please only park in the short stalls for cars. The Electric Vehicle Association of San Diego will display various EV for Earth Day events in April. For dates and locations check https://www.sandiegoev.org/events/
San Diego Fixit Clinics will be offered throughout the county for Earth Day month. We've become too accustomed to the throw-away lifestyle. If something breaks, we toss it out and buy a new one. This behavior is filling our landfills at an alarming rate, and electronic waste is now one of the biggest sources of pollution. So why not learn how to fix things instead? Bring your broken, non-working items—electronics, appliances, computers, toys, bicycles, clothes, and more—for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. We'll provide workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item. Even if we can't fix it, you'll learn more about how it was made and works. This event is fun for the whole family, so bring your kids! We are expanding rapidly and will host events all over San Diego County.

April 4th Thursday to April 7th Sunday 6 am – 9 am Spring Riverbed Homeless Census Event by San Diego River Foundation Join us for our seasonal census on homeless populations throughout the riverbed. In general, having a better understanding of the population and locations of people living in the riverbed informs advocacy (by SDRPF and others) to justify bringing additional homeless services and outreach to the riverbed. Our organization’s mission is generally focused on the ecology of the San Diego River, but we are committed to helping partner on sustainable solutions to the environmental and human challenges of people seeking refuge in the riverbed. We bring our expertise and familiarity with the riverbed to these partnerships with expert social scientists and outreach workers, in hopes that collaboration might yield better outcomes for both people and the river. Ultimately, we hope to create a better future for the San Diego River so that it can be a place for all of us. Some segments may require you to hike through dense vegetation, up and down steep embankments, and you may encounter water or mud along the trail. Be ready for an adventure! Various locations along the riverbed - locations vary by day. The general areas for each days are as follows: Thursday – Grantville, Friday - East Mission Valley, Saturday - East County (Santee). April 5th Friday 1 pm – 2:30 pm Ashes to Action: Honoring Our Climate Dead, Protesting Fossil Fuel Banks Climate change is making extreme weather events like this winter’s floods and rainstorms in SoCal the new normal and there are often fatalities. In the past fifty years approximately two million people have died from such events. Climate change is primarily driven by the fossil fuel industry which in turn is funded by our financial sector. From 2016-2022 four big US banks–Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo–have poured over one trillion dollars into the fossil fuel industry. THIS MUST STOP!! To protest this blood money and honor those who have died (most of whom are from developing nations), a coalition of environmental groups is holding a series of memorial services/protests in different locations around San Diego. The event will be in Solana Beach starting at Citibank, 740 Lomas Santa Fe Dr. and processing to Bank of America, 943 Lomas Santa Fe Dr.. We will finish up at a nearby Mission Federal Credit Union to commend them for refusing to invest in fossil fuels. Please register here for this crucial witness and if you can, wear black on the day of. This event is sponsored by the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice and partners including Third Act So Cal, GreenFaith, SanDiego350, CleanEarth4Kids, and the North County Equity and Justice Coalition. April 12th to May 15th War Costs Us the Earth Event by The Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS is a year-round campaign founded by the International Peace Bureau in 2014. Our overall goal is to reduce military spending and fund human and environmental needs instead. Recommended by Peace Resource Center We are witnessing the dramatic consequences of escalating global militarization, evident in the numerous armed conflicts around the world, notably in Gaza and Ukraine, but also in many other conveniently ignored places of the Global South. These are the consequences of a militaristic approach to international relations and global emergencies, imposed by countries of the North, which are at the same time responsible for most of the weapons produced and sold worldwide. Moreover, the environmental impacts -direct and indirect- resulting from these conflicts and militarization further underscore the pressing need for peace. War is costing us the Earth. April 18th Thursday 10 am Chemicals in Plastics: Human health costs Event by CHE Collaborative for Health and Environment Recommended by CleanEarth4Kids In 2022, the UN launched treaty negotiations in Dakar, Senegal, for an internationally legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution. Health was not emphasized in the announcement of the treaty process. Yet the proliferation of plastics has produced large-scale consequences for endocrine diseases and dysfunctions. Plastics are a source of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, commonly known as EDCs. These EDCs include phthalates (used in food packaging), bisphenols (used in can linings), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS (used in non-stick cooking utensils). Studies across the globe have documented widespread exposure to EDCs used in plastic materials, and their contribution to infertility and non-communicable diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. A recent study documented annual health costs of $250 billion/year related to plastics.
