Live4Gen is dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness and increasing prevention in the community while honoring former San Diego Native Genevieve Costello who lost her battle to breast cancer at the age of 26.
About Genevieve: Genevieve Marie Costello, lost her battle with breast cancer on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the young age of 26. Diagnosed with an aggressive stage IV breast cancer less than one month before, she fought like a champion in hospice, as she did on the court, the classroom and in life. Genevieve was born in San Diego and attended Mount Miguel High School where she played basketball, softball, golf and cross-country. She was inducted into the Mount Miguel High School Hall of Fame along with her 2003 CIF champion women’s basketball team, which was first CIF championship team in the school’s history. She went on to win two more CIF championships the following two years. Genevieve received MVP honors not only in basketball, but the Girls Golf team and Cross Country team. Ultimately, she was named the school's Outstanding Athlete her senior year. Genevieve attended UC Davis on a basketball scholarship, where she was one of the team’s stellar performers for four years and team captain her senior year. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development with plans to devote her time to making the world a better place. Which was definitely within her grasp as anyone who knew Genevieve was taken by her boundless enthusiasm, love of life, and her unconditional friendship.
Vision:. The vision for Live4Gen is to raise breast cancer awareness, specifically in young women under the age of 30. I am now 27 years old, and four close friends, all under the age of 30, have been diagnosed with cancer all from my neighborhood. Women are not required to get mammograms until the age of 40, and tragically in the four specific cases that took place in my neighborhood, the cancer was not caught until the later stages, leaving my friends with less of an opportunity to cure the cancer. By raising awareness within that specific group of people, money raised will go directly toward providing resources to women under the age of the 30 who may or may not be diagnosed. Through annual fundraising events, tactical partnerships with corporations and organizations who share the passion for finding a cure and leveraging the athletic community.
