They Say It's Your Birthday

The Herrick Center for Children, group foster home, at which we have been throwing birthday parties for the last 3 years closes its doors at the end of this month. Last Saturday was the final party and last night we gathered all the kids together for a final farewell. It has been an amazing journey being a part of this organization, meeting these special children who are going through so much at a young age and watching our family, friends, neighbors rally around us every step of the way, supporting the parties with donations and volunteering. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by a community, locally and globally, who cares about disadvantaged youth, so much so, that we all stood up together and did something, to make their lives a bit sunnier and to show them that their community knows about them and celebrates their precious lives. It's a bitter sweet end to our journey. Thank you for the part you played in it. Your generosity and love over the years will not be forgotten.

All good things come to an end, so why not celebrate! Last night we gathered at the foster home and said our good byes to the children. We made sure to tell them how much we love them and wish them well in their futures. And we didn't forget to bring the goods! Thanks to Linda Yin of San Diego's Finest Donuts and Bakery for setting up the most amazing dessert bar! One of the kids stood in front of the table and declared, "I'm in heaven!" We left each child with a gift to bring with them into their new home. We're going to miss those faces and those personalities. Thanks to all that were able to make it out and join us in the well wishes.

We want to let you know that the group foster home at which we've been hosting monthly birthday parties for the last 3 years is closing its doors at the end of this month. We found out on Monday.

The last birthday party we will host is this Saturday. We are in discussions as to the future of They Say It's Your Birthday as an organization and it is our intention to coordinate a farewell event to say goodbye to the children, if possible, leaving them each with a small gift to help them get settled in their new homes.

Come what may, it has been an honor to be in these children's lives and also to have your support throughout the years. Thank you for all that you have contributed to the children.

There was one little boy to celebrate this Saturday, Antonio, and he LOVED the huge stuffed toy panda! At the end of the party, he curled up on the floor with his new stuffed friend, kicked back while enjoying his birthday cake. It was a fun party!

Each month the birthday boys and girls living at the foster institution send us their birthday gift wish lists and we deliver! Often the birthday boys ask for the latest Lego set or an action figure, but sometimes all a boy wants is a big stuffed bear to cuddle with! How cute is this one found by Volunteer Mike Alvarez?! We think birthday boy Antonio is going to love this larger than life teddy. Thanks Mike!

Who knew charades could be so fun!? Party Lead, Kim and volunteers, Carlye, Nicole, Krissy and Lynne had to keep up the guessing with all the creative and silent ways the kids used to describe things, actions and animals. There were four birthdays in July! From a pair of Converse to Barbie, the birthday boys and girls gave us their birthday wish lists and we delivered! Thanks volunteers! You were so fun to play with.

Last night, local businesses, a local charity and people who who like to have fun while giving back, united for an evening of lavishness! TSIYB would like to send a huge THANK YOU to Yelp, Trish Sanderson and the North County Elite Yelp Crew as well as the restaurant Solace & the Moonlight Lounge and florist Plenty of Petals for your contributions towards the parties for the children. Our board members, Nicole and Kim, had a great time with you all last night. THANK YOU!

Thank you to TSIYB’s Secretary of the Board, Nicole Danhauser and volunteers: Michael Alvarez, Elizabeth Fraser, Tara Lieberman, and Evan McGinnis for everything you did to make April’s birthday party so much fun. Treasure hunt turned BINGO game, the party left all the birthday boys and girl with a special party memory and a gift from their wish list. Eliga got a Hot Wheels track set, Abel an ITunes gift card, AJ a DS Nerf Cover, Michelle a new backpack and Ashton the Hot Wheels Monster Jam Triple Blast Arena. A big bunch of children to celebrate this month.

We have something wonderful to share; GEICO is sponsoring all TSIYB parties for 2013! Not only that, they are sponsoring the creation of sensory rooms at the foster home. Sensory rooms are special rooms used as therapy for children with limited communication skills. What generous and wonderful gift. Thank you GEICO! It’s great to know a huge company like yours cares about the children in our local communities.
