Huge thank you to the incredible students and faculty at the 8th College Social Justice Program at UCSD for welcoming us today to speak about the current ICE crisis and the real impact immigration enforcement is having on students and families here in San Diego.

These conversations matter. The next generation of advocates, educators, lawyers, social workers, and leaders are sitting in those classrooms right now. They're asking hard questions, locked-in listening, and thinking about what justice actually looks like in practice.

I shared stories from students whose parents were detained, the toll these crises create, and the urgent need for communities to become safe, informed, and responsive spaces.

Thank you for your compassion, engagement, and willingness to step into uncomfortable but necessary conversations. And thank you for caring about the humanity behind the headlines.

Thank you for an incredible year and for the sweet gift, HTHNC! We truly survived it together.

Congratulations to the seniors heading off to college. We are SO proud of you. Watching you push through challenges, break cycles, and create new paths for yourselves and your families has been incredibly inspiring. Your parents and families have sacrificed so much to help you get here, and this moment belongs to them too.

The future is bright. Keep going. Always here for you!!!

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to meet with Sara Jacobs and her team to discuss the impact recent immigration enforcement actions are having on children in our community.

We were honored to share letters written by students whose parents were recently detained and to ensure their voices were heard directly.

We appreciate Congresswoman Jacobs and her staff for taking the time to listen with compassion and care, and we look forward to continuing to work together to support students and families across San Diego County.

Today’s workshop was extra special. 💛

We were honored to welcome Florencia Mendoza as a guest speaker for our students. I first met Florencia in 2012 when she was a high school student navigating many of the same challenges our students face today. Watching her grow into a UC graduate and thriving professional has been incredible to witness.

Florencia shared her journey with such honesty, strength, and heart that there were tears in the room. Her story reminded our students that where you start does not determine where you can go.

Thank you, Florencia, for coming back to pour into the next generation, for being vulnerable, and for showing our students what is possible. We are so proud of you.

This week, a student pulled me aside and asked, "Ms. Scully, can I ask you something?"

He was nervous. You could see it.

He told me he works as a dishwasher at a restaurant and wants to apply for a better position, but he's scared to ask because of his accent.

He spoke perfect English. Yes, he has an accent. But more than that, he has work ethic, humility, kindness, and this quiet confidence that shows up in everything he does.

This is a student who comes to every meeting. Who is always respectful, engaged, and grateful. And that day, while worrying about whether his accent might hold him back, he was sitting next to a brand new student from South East Asia, helping her navigate a school where she doesn't yet speak the language.

That's who he is.

I gave him a simple script to ask for the promotion and told him I would be a reference for him anytime. But the truth is, he doesn't need one to prove his worth. He already is everything employers say they're looking for.

To every student who worries they're "not enough" because of an accent, background, or where they started:

Your story is your strength.
Your voice, exactly as it is, matters.
And the world is truly better because you're in it. 🦋
