Era el año escolar 1997 – 98 y mi nieto estudiaba en el 1er año con el Profesor Ramón Espinal, yo era voluntaria en la Escuela Rosa Parks y ayudaba al profesor en su grupo. En el mes de Octubre platicando con madres de familia les comente si me ayudaban a hacer un altar del Día de Mu***os para que los niños vieran algo de nuestras tradiciones mexicanas. Algunos padres conocían nuestras tradiciones
y aceptaron, entonces hable con el profesor quien dio el permiso de hacerlo en su salón. Los administrativos y directores de la escuela, algunos maestros, la presidenta del Salón de Padres y padres de los alumnos estaba fascinados desde ese momento. Lo que causo que cada año se hiciera en el salón de padres o en el auditorio y también en el salón del profesor. Tratamos de hacerlo en otras escuelas con el paso de los años se hizo en la Escuela Monroe Clark y lo llevaron al Consulado Mexicano y se siguió haciendo por varios años después. La SAY San Diego me ayudo y pusimos nuestro primer altar en el parque de Jeremy Henwood en City Heights en el año 2007 y a unos años en el Farmers Market. Personas de la comunidad se interesaron y me ayudaron a poner también sus altares. Este año cumplimos 10 años de haber puesto el primer altar comunitario en la comunidad de City Heights. Hermelinda se siente muy agradecida con la comunidad porque todos ayudan en diferentes formas y hacen posible esta actividad. Gracias.
“The story behind the Dia de Los Mu***os celebration begins in the school year of 1997 – 98 when my grandson was studying first grade and I was a volunteer at Rosa Parks Elementary. During the month of October talking with parents I asked them if they would help me make an altar of the day of the dead tradition so that the children could see something of our Mexican traditions. Some parents knew our traditions and accepted, so after talking with my grandson’s first grade teacher we obtained permission to create the altar in the classroom. We never imagined the effect it was going to have for many years to come. School administrators, teachers, and the Director of the Parent Center were fascinated from that moment on. From then on, every year to be done in the parent room or in the auditorium and also in the teacher's lounge. We tried to do it in other schools over the years it was done at Monroe Clark School and they took it to the Mexican consulate and continued to do it for several years after
In 2007, SAY San Diego helped me with our first Dia de los Mu***os altar at the Jeremy Henwood Park in City Heights and even in some years we held the event at the local Farmers Market. People in the community gained interest and assisted by creating their altars. This year’s celebration will mark 10 years since the first altar was placed in the community of City Heights.
