On Oct. 8, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project returned to Oʻahu to end its 2026 field season and a five-year effort to remove marine debris threatening Papahānaumokuākea’s reefs, shorelines and wildlife.

After five years of cleaning Hawaiʻi’s ecosystems, the PMDP reports over 147,000 pounds of debris removed during its 2026 missions.
