ABOUT SHERMAN HEIGHTS DÍA DE LOS MU***OS
IN MEXICO WE DECORATE THE GRAVEYARD. IN SHERMAN HEIGHTS WE DECORATE THE NEIGHBORHOOD. In 1994, a group of residents from the Sherman Heights community, one of San Diego’s most historic barrios, and a predominantly Latino immigrant community, approached their local community center to request a space to create an altar in honor of their loved ones during Día
de los Mu***os. Many of the residents were recent immigrants who were raised with the tradition of visiting cemeteries with their families to decorate the graves of their loved ones. For 26 years, the Sherman Heights Community Center has commemorated this tradition and we continue embracing, honoring, and respecting the culture and traditions of our residents as well as cultivating appreciation for the Latino culture throughout the region. The organization has established itself as a hub of arts and culture in the San Diego community attracting thousands of visitors from San Diego County, Orange County, Los Angeles, Arizona, and the neighboring Baja Region during this month-long celebration.
