The speaker at our meeting this month, District 5340 Governor Jeb E Bakke, shared his Rotary-inspired transformation and helped us pin our newest member, Enola Kipte.

President Chris selected Jessie Case for Jeb’s Governor Recognition Award which recognizes an outstanding member who has been pivotal in the club's success.

After the meeting, a large group of us went to Islands for drinks and more time together.

Join us at our monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 18 at 6pm at the Mission Valley Library!

The speaker for this meeting will be our new District 5340 Governor Jeb E Bakke. He served as President of RB Sunrise in 2020-21. He has served the district as International Service Chair from 2021-23 and was an assistant governor for Area 15 that serves both the Paradise Valley and Sweetwater Rotary clubs as well as four active Rotaract clubs - D5340 of SDSU, UCSD, Pacific Beach and City Heights.

Prospective members are welcome! Email us at least 24 hours prior to the meeting at [email protected] to let us know you’re coming. If you aren’t a member, your first meeting is free. We ask $10 to cover the cost of dinner from members and visiting Rotarians.

Tonight members of our club enjoyed a social get together at Lazy Dog. President Chris even brought his dog! We had a great time catching up, learning more about each other, laughing and of course talking about Rotary.

At our meeting last week our own Esther Garcia took us half-way around the world, sharing pictures and stories of Rotaplast International’s medical mission to Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. They worked 15-hour days and treated 217 people.

Esther is an operating-room nurse who learned about Rotaplast by reading District 5340 Rotary NewsBits. Founded in 1992 by a doctor in San Francisco and a Rotarian, Rotaplast helps children and families “worldwide by eliminating the burden of cleft lip and/or palate, burn scarring, and other deformities.”

Esther has now been on 7 medical trips (including for Mission Esperanza and Thousand Smiles) in 5 countries since joining Rotary 13 months ago. Next stop: the Philippines. Go Esther!

Also during the meeting, our Foundation Chair Marge Cole presented Bill Stanhope with a pin and art piece to welcome him into Rotary International’s Bequest Society.

Earlier this month a few of our members attended HandsOn San Diego's VolunBEERS event at Seek Beer Company in North Park to support our Public Image Chair Jessie and Community Service Co-Chair Debbie K. The attendees donated over 1,000 school supply items, packed 400 pencil pouches, and crafted bookmarks and cards for elementary students. The beneficiary was Encanto Elementary, a Title I school in Southeast San Diego that requested support for their students.

Our club had a lot to celebrate at our end of year party this year! Under President Julia Ryan's leadership our membership almost doubled, we reached our goals in giving, and served over 1100 hours of service. It was a great way to kickoff our new president Christopher Romero's year.

We were grateful to have District 5340 Governor Jeb Bakke and Ana Maria Fernandez of the Club Rotario Tijuana there to celebrate with us. (And maybe a bit less grateful for the overly friendly pigeon that seemed determined to join our club.) Big thanks to Gary John Collins and the Air Conditioned Lounge for hosting us at their beautiful outdoor patio!

Last month we joined District 5340 in celebrating the end of the Rotary year at the District Governor's Dinner which took place at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

Our club received the Membership Growth & Sustainability Award which recognizes clubs that have demonstrated success in attracting new members, engaging existing members, and creating a vibrant and welcoming club culture that supports long-term growth, member engagement, and retention.

Congratulations to our outgoing president Julia Ryan and outgoing District Governor Luis Carranza! Our incoming president Christopher Romero was sworn in by incoming District Governor Jeb Bakke.

At our club meeting on June 18, Camille Currier, shown here with our Julia Ryan and Sesy Enriquez amid a slew of onesies and pajamas donated by our members, taught us about Gently Hugged, a nonprofit that provides clothing and blankets to babies in need.

Founded 14 years ago by two nurses, the nonprofit now has more than 100 volunteers and 40 collection points. Donated clothing and other items are picked up from bins, checked for quality, laundered, sorted into age/size categories, and inspected again. These bags, carefully packed with up to 80 items, go home with mom from a hospital, neighborhood clinic, public-health agency, or community service organization.

Because this was our last meeting of the Rotary year, our outgoing president, Julia Ryan, reminded us of what we accomplished. It’s a lot! Highlights:

- 8 added members
- Highly successful RYLA, Model UN, and LEAD activities
- Rose Parade float building
- Thousand Smiles clinic help
- Meal packing funded by our trivia fundraiser
- 2x annual fund giving goal with 100% participation

…And lots of fun. Our thanks to Julia and all board members for their leadership. Go MVE!
