At our meeting on Tuesday our own Sesy Enriquez shared about a free pop-up clinic hosted by OneSight Essilor Luxottica, LensCrafters' charitable foundation. She joined 80 volunteers as OneVision and its partners used portable equipment to turn a school gym near Long Beach into a temporary LensCrafters lab. In five days, they saw 904 patients who might not otherwise receive vision care. They made 587 pairs of glasses on-site and ordered bifocals for later delivery.

Sesy described some of the remarkable technologies involved, including a handheld device that diagnoses glaucoma. It touches the eye, a frightful prospect even for adults. Sesy asked to take the test. When asked why, she said, “I want to know what the kids are going to experience!” Her empathy is so Rotarian.

Many of us take corrected vision for granted. A picture of a wide-eyed girl looking through her first glasses in amazement reminded us of its value.

On Saturday May 16, we hosted our Epic Day of Service with the San Diego River Park Foundation at their new nature education center and eco-park, Grant Park. Rotarians and volunteers across the globe come together for a record-breaking day of hands-on service, called Epic Day of Service—addressing local needs while contributing to a powerful global impact.

We helped care for their new native plants by creating a berm of mulch around the base of the plants and watering them and extended the decomposed granite ground covering for their shaded table space.

Join us at our monthly meeting on Tuesday May 19 at 6pm at the Mission Valley Library!

The speaker for this meeting will be Sharon Dutton, Director of Operations for Gently Hugged’s Rancho Bernardo location. Gently Hugged provides new/gently used baby clothing for San Diego mothers with babies in need. Clothes are sorted and items of each size sufficient for the first year are placed in a reusable blue or pink canvas bag and labeled for a baby "boy" or "girl." The completed bags are then distributed by nurses and social workers to low income, military, immigrant, and foster families in need within underserved areas.

Prospective members are welcome! Email us at least 24 hours prior to the meeting at [email protected] to let us know you’re coming. If you aren’t a member, your first meeting is free. We ask $10 to cover the cost of dinner from members and visiting Rotarians.

Join us in a global movement helping in local communities called Epic Day of Service on Saturday May 16!

We’ve partnered with the San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF) to help bring native plant gardens to life at their new eco-park, Grant Park, in Mission Valley.

Volunteers will dig in and join the fun to help plant native plants, w**d, water, mulch, and maintain their native seed library. No experience is necessary! We may also help with trash pick up and graffiti removal.

At the end of April a few of our members attended the Rotary District 5340 Multidistrict Conference at the Ga***rd Pacific Resort in Chula Vista.

Our Foundation Chair and Past District Governor Marge received an AKS (Arch Klumpf Society) crystal from Past Rotary International President Gordon McInally and Rotary Foundation Trustee Vicki Puliz to recognize her generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

Our President Elect Chris hosted one of the hands-on service projects packing 20,000 nutritious meals for families in need through The Outreach Program and our member Elana served as a sergeant at arms throughout the conference.

On Saturday we had a great turnout for the annual NAMIWalks at Liberty Station which benefits NAMI San Diego's mental health initiatives. We joined the Rotary District 5340 team to walk the 5K course. Many of our members walk in memory of Past District Governor Chuck Pretto who championed youth mental health initiatives. Our club members contributed $350 towards the cause.

At our meeting last week District 5340 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and Model United Nations participants from Madison High School entertained us and guests. A half-dozen members of Rotaract of San Diego State University, Susan Josephson (Old Mission Rotary Club president), and District Governor Elect Jeb E Bakke joined us.

The students we sponsored to participate in Model UN shared their experiences representing Somalia and Pakistan. One student's participation in the program the previous year inspired him to join ASB and led to his being its president this year.

The RYLA participants entertained us with camp stories cloaked in secrecy. One student, who attended last year, had persuaded some of them to apply while honoring RYLA’s non-disclosure agreement. Apparently, “You’ll have so much fun” is enough of a pitch. The trepidation brought on by such mystery soon gave way to connections and personal growth. Another student described it as “a life-changing experience. I realized that with the right motivation, anything can be accomplished.”

Join us at our monthly meeting on Tuesday Apr. 21 at 6pm at the Mission Valley Library!

Our speakers for this meeting will be students from Madison High School that we sent to Rotary District 5340’s Model United Nations Conference in March and RYLA in April. The Model UN students will share how they prepared for the program, how they presented their side(s) of the issues, what their reaction was to the event, and how the program prepared them for the next step in their life journey.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, or “RYLA,” recognizes and rewards deserving 11th grade students for their leadership and service. Each April, about 200 young leaders attend an all-expenses-paid weekend in Idyllwild, where they are inspired by a diverse group of exceptional speakers, make life-long friends, and discuss ethical and social issues affecting leadership today.

Prospective members are welcome! Email us at least 24 hours prior to the meeting at [email protected] to let us know you’re coming. If you aren’t a member, your first meeting is free. We ask $10 to cover the cost of dinner from members and visiting Rotarians.

Last weekend 7 of our members (the most from any club in District 5340!) participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp in Idyllwild for high school juniors. Most of us served as facilitators of small groups of families and one of our members, Elana Levens-Craig is on the Rotaract Committee.

It was an inspirational weekend for everyone involved with the participating students leaving RYLA as confident leaders who put service above self. We even had the opportunity to meet the 4 students from Madison High School who our club sponsored to attend. We'll get to hear from those students about their experience at our meeting on Tuesday!
