Happy World Storytelling Day! World Storytelling Day, celebrated on March 20th (or the spring equinox), is a global event dedicated to the oral art of storytelling. Originating in Sweden as "Alla berättares dag" around 1991-1992, it spread across Scandinavia, Latin America, and Australia before becoming a worldwide phenomenon by 2003-2005 to encourage sharing stories.
Key Historical Points:
1991–1992: Started in Sweden as Alla berättares dag (All Storytellers Day).
1997: Australian storytellers coordinated a "Celebration of Story" on March 20th, known as the International Day of Oral Narrators.
2001-2002: The idea spread to Scandinavian countries (Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia) via the network Ratatosk.
2003: Became recognized globally as World Storytelling Day as more countries, including Canada, began participating.
2005-Present: The event spread across 5 continents with a central theme adopted annually by participants worldwide, such as "New Beginnings," "Building Bridges," or "Light in the Dark".
It is celebrated to create community, share wisdom, and encourage listening, often linking to the equinox to represent a balance of light and dark.
