How did a Minnesota-proud, former school principal, mom of a young child, and new resident of San Diego find herself volunteering at Gently Hugged?

She visited a “mom blog” to learn more about the happenings in her neighborhood. She is Lauren Than, a Gently Hugged final inspector since 2024, and now, also the Lead for Collections and Bin Management at our Rancho Bernardo office.

Lauren, an undeniable people person, looks forward to joining forces with bin sites and Gently Hugged drivers who ensure the generous donations from our community continue to arrive at the RB doorstep!

1,167 newborns in San Diego County received one of our Gently Hugged care bundles between January and September in 2026. We are extremely proud to have supported so many babies and to have provided the essential care items they need to not just survive, but thrive, throughout their entire first year of life.

This Q3 total is a 19% increase from the care bundle total at this point of 2025 - which speaks to the impressive, collective efforts of our 100% volunteer team of supporters at both our Rancho Bernardo and North Coastal offices. However, we know that there are even more local infants in need and our mission is to wrap each and every one in care.

Exciting updates from the Rancho Bernardo office!

Over the last few weeks, our space has undergone a beautiful transformation. With fresh paint on the walls, bright new lighting, and freshly cleaned carpets, the office feels completely renewed. This physical reorganization reflects our new Team Leadership model, designed to share the volunteer workload seamlessly across our entire operation.

A massive thank you goes out to our incredible volunteers (and some spouses), who rolled up their sleeves to handle the heavy lifting, packing, and rearranging of workstations. Thanks to all the hard work, we are back up and running at full capacity to continue our mission of clothing babies in need.

We are so thankful for this fresh start in our incredible cottage at Bernardo Winery and the amazing team that made it happen!

📚 We love our libraries! 📚

Sending a big Gently Hugged thank you to the staff at the Pacific Highlands Ranch Library for hosting a clothing drive in support of San Diego babies in need. Our community bins make it easy for anyone to donate gently used (or new) 0-12 month baby clothing, board books in great condition, baby blankets, and bibs.

🧸 Oh baby! 🧸

The Woman's Club of Vista held a baby shower on September 9, 2026 and selected Gently Hugged to be their charity benefactor. Over 200 items were donated by the ladies, including enough pajamas, onesies, outfits, socks, booties and books to fill many care bundles for San Diego babies.

The The Woman's Club of Vista GFWC has been a partner and advocate for Gently Hugged for many years and we are so very thankful for their generosity. Club member and officer, Nancy B. Jones, is shown here with GH Board Member, Jan Rightmer, and many of the thoughtful donations.

Gently Hugged is entirely 100% volunteer-run. Every care bundle we prepare, every item we sort, and every family we support is made possible by people like you who choose to give their time, skills, and care.

When you volunteer, you play a direct role in helping babies start life warm, safe, and supported. Sending a big THANK YOU to the Moonlight Chapter of the National Charity League for continuing to volunteer in our offices! We truly cherish our on-going volunteer groups and individuals because they power our mission here in San Diego County.

🌟 A Wish Come True 🌟

Earlier this month, an event was held on the beautiful grounds of the Bernardo Winery where the Gently Hugged RB office is located. A Wishing Well was included as a part of the venue and the host provided a bounty of coins to be tossed into a fountain by the guests. After the event, the client wished to donate the coins to a local nonprofit. Gently Hugged was chosen as the recipient at the suggestion of the Winery management.

Bernardo Winery Event Coordinators, Julie and Alexa, presented a $500 check to Gently Hugged at the Wishing Well site. We are grateful for the support of the generous client and the warmhearted owners of the Bernardo Winery!

The Women's Fellowship group at the Community Congregational Church in Chula Vista has donated over 1,000 cozy embroidered-edge fleece blankets to Gently Hugged since 2017 and we are so grateful!

Representatives from Gently Hugged were invited to attend a monthly meeting and luncheon in September. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to thank these ladies in person and share more about Gently Hugged and San Diego babies we serve.

The Community Congregational Church of Chula Vista (United Church of Christ) also presented a generous cash donation to help further our mission. Thank you to this generous community!

Gently Hugged does not determine which families qualify for support. Instead, we rely on trusted professionals who know the families they serve and understand their unique needs.

These partnerships help ensure care bundles are distributed with care, respect, and dignity to the families who can benefit most. With our network of distribution partners across San Diego County, Gently Hugged care bundles reach babies and families through:

- Hospitals
- Prenatal clinics
- Social service agencies
- Public health programs
- Foster family support programs
- Community-based organizations
- Home visits
