CALL TO ACTION!!!

It's time to stop ALEC and its mouthpieces from destroying our democracy, families and world. Stop Hate with us!

We apologize for the late notice. Let us know if you're able to join us.

From Courage Campaign:

Attention Southern California Progressives.....!
The bigots are coming to our backyard and Californians up and down the coast are going to tell them that anti-LGBT hate is NOT welcome in our state, and that we don't want them dictating which one of their bigot puppets will run for President of the United States.

This Wednesday, July 22, the American Legislative Exchange Council ( ALEC) is hosting its big annual conference in San Diego.
Legislators from across the country will arrive to take their marching orders from the KOCH BROTHERS, giant corporations, and right wing millionaires and billionaires.

ALEC pushes model legislative bills designed to:
Restrict our ability to vote
Increase gun violence
Destroy our environment
End our right to organize
And give billions of dollars away in corporate welfare

Right wing presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Scott Walker and Mike Huckabee will be addressing the conference with their messages of ANTI-GAY HATE. They want to destroy marriage equality in America and halt all progress for LGBT RIGHTS. We need to let them know they can't slither into California without paying the price !

Our goal is to have 4000 activists show what real people power looks like and sounds like. Can you join us?
We can create a media backlash if we show up and make a major ruckus outside.

Progressives will gather from all over California this Wednesday, July 22nd at 3:00 pm to oppose ALEC, Walker, Cruz and Huckabee.

AFL-CIO VICE PRESIDENTS AND THERE CONTINGENTS WILL BE THEIR TO SUPPORT US.

The rally will be held at the Embarcadero Park North, San Diego at 3:00 pm. We will be right across the street from the Grand Hyatt Hotel where ALEC is holding their conference of wealthy funders.

Our voices WILL BE HEARD!
We need your help. California is a NO ALEC ZONE !

Courage campaign will be there as will those of us representing GetEQUAL AND Q***R NATION.

PLEASE SHARE THIS POST DAILY UNTIL THE CONFERENCE.

IT'S OFFICIAL: MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN ALL 50 STATES! Today we are ALL more equal and better for it. The majority of our Justices are now in history as being on the right side of history. While this was one of many battles that are still left in securing full LGBT rights, this is a landmark ruling that will help get that work done. How will YOU celebrate?

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 on Friday that it is legal for all Americans, no matter their gender or sexual orientation, to marry the people they love. The decision is a historic

Yesterday San Diego County Clerk Ernest Dronenburg Jr. filed a petition (Dronenburg v. Brown) with the California Supreme Court, seeking an "immediate temporary stay" on the issuance of marriage licenses for same-sex couples. We are currently reviewing the details on this matter to explore possible community responses to this filing.

“Equality is a moral imperative. And as president, I will place the weight of my administration behind the enactment of a fully inclusive Employment Non Discrimination Act to outlaw workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all LGBT Americans. Americans are yearning for leadership that can empower us to reach for what we know is possible. I believe that we can achieve the goal of full equality for the millions of LGBT people in this country. To do that, we need leadership that can appeal to the best parts of the human spirit. Join with me, and I will provide that leadership.” – Barack Obama, Job Application, February 28, 2008.

The Michelle Obama heckling episode revealed an important aspect of the Obama presidency – the feeling among many of his own core constituents that the best and only way to score policy victories from the administration is to push, pressure and cajole an often reticent White House into action.

GetEQUAL member Ellen Sturtz stood up and put a face on those demanding workplace protections for LGBT employees this evening at a DNC fundraiser featuring Michelle Obama.

WASHINGTON -- First lady Michelle Obama's speech Tuesday evening at a private Democratic National Committee fundraiser was interrupted by a protester, who demanded equality for g**s and le****ns.

Today I had a choice.

I could have chosen to attend my children's Valentine events at their elementary school -- but I chose instead to get arrested in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience to take a stand for LGBTQ equality.

You see, we are in the middle of a "movement moment" for LG...BTQ equality -– a fight that has gone on for decades, and that many believe we will inevitably win. The president even mentioned Stonewall during his inauguration speech, but now our challenge is to seize this "movement moment" -- as was done at the Stonewall Inn in 1969.

When I first joined this fight, I was a mom working full-time while raising my beautiful young children in the conservative Central Valley region of California. I took action because inequality came knocking on my door -- though I had run from the oppressive environment of my native Mississippi and sought refuge in the gleaming promise of California, I couldn't escape inequality's grip when Proposition 8 passed.

Nearly three years ago, we mobilized. We pushed back on Prop 8, marched on Washington, and launched GetEQUAL -- believing that we needed to inject a new sense of urgency into the movement. We needed the urgency to ensure that we are empowering LGBTQ folks and our allies to take bold action for full equality, and to ensure that we are holding accountable those who stand in the way.

Over the past three years, we've seen the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the evolution of the president in his personal views on marriage equality, and the emergence of two Supreme Court cases that will determine next steps in the battle for marriage equality. But now isn't the time to just wait on our equality to come to us -- now is the time to seize it! Here are a few ways that you can join in this "movement moment" and bring us closer to full LGBTQ equality:

We're on the brink of seeing the first comprehensive immigration reform bill in a generation -- and if we don't organize *right now,* we risk getting yet another watered-down bill that puts LGBTQ immigrants at greater risk than before. We must push for a clear and direct pathway to citizenship, a humane asylum policy, provisions for binational same-sex couples, and an end to harsh enforcement policies that lead to massive deportations and the cruel separation of families. If you want to help ensure that inclusive, comprehensive immigration reform becomes the law of the land, sign up here: http://bit.ly/getequalimmigration

We also must insist -- without rest -- that the president show leadership on ending employment discrimination by signing an executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating against LGBTQ Americans, and that Congress finally pass a fully-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act. For decades, ENDA has languished in Congress -- now is the time to get a vote in the Senate and to then push like hell to get it through the House. If you want to help ensure that not one more person is fired or not fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, sign up here: http://bit.ly/getequalemployment

Finally, this March and again later in the summer, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court as the justices examine both the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8. That hate-filled effort to take rights away from our families -- from our children -- will be back in the nation's consciousness, and we will be organizing for our lives. The highest court in the land will tackle the question of marriage equality -- and we're going to make sure that our lives, our stories, and our futures are front and center for that debate. If you want to organize a local event to highlight the broad public support across the country for marriage equality, sign up here: www.lighttojustice.org

I may be missing my children's Valentine parties today, but knowing that you will join me in this call to action makes missing that moment with them worth it. In the end, if we can seize this moment now, the lessons my children will learn about their family's right to life, liberty, and justice will be invaluable.

Find a way to get involved -- we need you to mobilize during this "movement moment" and to help us get equal!

Get Out! Get Active! GetEQUAL!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

State of the Union Left Too Many Questions Unanswered

In Speech, President Obama Does Not Acknowledge Plight of LGBT Workers and Continues to Push an Immigration Bill Full of Harsh Enforcement Measures

Washington, DC — GetEQUAL — a national civil rights organization fighting for full equality for le***an, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans — responded to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech with the following statement:

GetEQUAL is committed to inclusive, comprehensive immigration reform and to ending employment discrimination against LGBT workers. Though GetEQUAL congratulates President Obama in his efforts to seek bipartisan support for comprehensive immigration reform, we remain skeptical that the plan the president has laid out would protect and honor our legacy as a nation of immigrants. And though GetEQUAL applauds President Obama’s efforts to strengthen the middle class, too many LGBT workers are prevented from reaching economic stability because we lack federal non-discrimination laws.

Even as President Obama moves forward on immigration reform and on economic revitalization, he can take clear and concrete steps to ensure that LGBT Americans — documented and undocumented — get a fair shot because we are all willing to do our fair share of work, but need the structural equality to get there.

“President Obama continues to push for a version of immigration reform that focuses entirely on enforcement instead of laying out a progressive vision that would put 11 million people on a pathway to citizenship and would include all of our families,” said Felipe Sousa-Rodriguez, GetEQUAL’s national field director. “As someone who would qualify for the DREAM Act and who is part of a binational family, I know first-hand that true comprehensive immigration reform must include LGBTQ families, a fair and just pathway to citizenship, and an end to harsh enforcement that separates families,” said Sousa-Rodriguez.

“Time and time again, President Obama continues to pay lip service to employment equity, but refuses to take the simple step of signing an Executive Order that would end LGBT discrimination by federal contractors — and that would prevent taxpayer dollars, including taxpayer dollars from LGBT Americans, from going to discriminatory companies,” said Heather Cronk, GetEQUAL’s managing director. “He had his pen out today to sign other Executive Orders — it’s incumbent on the LGBT community to ask why he decided to put that pen away before protecting 25% of the American workforce from workplace discrimination.”
