BREAKING NEWS: State of the World's Sea Turtles just released!

Sea turtle populations across the East and Central Pacific Ocean are showing some incredible recoveries and some alarming declines. Here’s the breakdown by species:

πŸ”Ή East Pacific Green Turtles (SoCal nearshore natives)
βœ… Status: Low Risk / Low Threat
πŸ“ˆ Populations near full recovery thanks to 1990s protections in Mexico & strong efforts in the GalΓ‘pagos.

πŸ”Ή East Pacific Olive Ridleys (Mexico's most common sea turtle)
βœ… Status: Low Risk / Low Threat
πŸ’ͺ Famous for their mass nesting events (β€œarribadas”), these turtles have rebounded dramatically in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.

πŸ”Ή East Pacific Leatherbacks (San Francisco & Monterey Bay's Summer-Fall Visitors)
🚨 Status: High Risk / High Threat
πŸ“‰ Critically endangered despite decades of conservation. Still declining, but signs of stabilization since 2010 offer a sliver of hope. Major threat: bycatch in coastal fisheries.

πŸ”Ή South Central Pacific Green Turtles
🚨 Status: High Risk / High Threat
⚠️ World’s most threatened green turtle population. Remote rookeries + bycatch + climate change = real danger.

πŸ”Ή East Pacific Hawksbills (The turtles that get killed for their beautiful shells, and that protect corals!)
⚠️ Status: High Threat
🧭 Rediscovered in 2008, they rely on mangrove estuaries and remain vulnerable but are rebounding in El Salvador, Nicaragua & Panama.

πŸ”Ή North Central Pacific (Hawaiian) Greens & Hawksbills
πŸ“‰ Status: High Risk, Low Threat
🏝️ Hawaiian turtles have rebounded since the 1970s, but limited nesting sites and climate risks keep them vulnerable.

πŸ› οΈ What’s working?
Long-term community conservationβ€”from Baja to Hawaiiβ€”and international cooperative groups like LaΓΊd OPO and ICAPO are making a difference. SoCal Sea Turtles is proud to be one small organization working to protect and promote awareness of the turtles in our local waters!

HAPPY WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY! From the leatherbacks protecting our fisheries from egg-eating jellies up north, to the hawksbills cleaning coral reefs of light-blocking sponges south of the border, sea turtles are an integral part of healthy ocean ecosystems.

If you want to help keep our oceans working like they should, make sure to do your part by removing old fishing line, hooks, or nets you find discarded along our beaches, piers, bays, and wetlands. Make sure to slow your boats and jetskis down as you get close to shore, and always post a lookout on the bow to scout for surfacing turtles.

Everything that helps sea turtles also helps humans, and the aquatic ecosystems we all need to survive.

On June 14th, we celebrate Green Sea Turtle Day! Primarily herbivores, green sea turtles munch on seagrass, algae, sea slugs and snails, and seaweeds. This is the species most commonly seen nearshore in SoCal, from the San Gabriel River to San Diego Bay! They are easiest to spot in the early morning or late evening, just before sundown, when they are less active. During the day, they can be found swimming in pretty much any body of water, popping up next to surfers, and delighting snorkelers in La Jolla Cove. You can learn more about our local East Pacific green sea turtles on our website, SoCalSeaTurtles.org. To learn more about green sea turtles worldwide, visit www.seaturtleweek.com/green-turtle-day.

We are supposed to be at Family STEAM Day in Imperial Beach today, but unfortunately, we had to stay home due to a minor injury that would have made setup and breakdown impossible. We are so sad to miss this event and we hope it is a great success!

Thanks so much to Sun Harbor Marina for your dedication to supporting healthy sea turtle populations! 🐒πŸ›₯οΈβš“οΈπŸ’™ Not only did we have a great day meeting all the conscientious boaters and staff at the Marina yesterday, we also got to see the very first β€œHAVE YOU SEEN ME?” Sea turtle reporting sign posted for everyone to see 24/7! This means that sea turtles hanging around Sun Harbor will have a better chance of receiving veterinary care if they need it, since the phone number for the West Coast Sea Turtle Stranding Network Hotline is posted for any passers-by who might have seen a turtle in need of a rescue! If you are the owner or manager of a waterfront property between Santa Barbara and the border with Mexico, please contact us to find out how you can get your own sea turtle awareness signs! 🐒πŸ›₯οΈβš“οΈπŸ’™πŸ’πŸ›₯οΈβš“οΈπŸ’™πŸ’πŸ›₯οΈβš“οΈπŸ’™πŸ’πŸ›₯οΈβš“οΈπŸ’™πŸ’πŸ›₯οΈβš“οΈπŸ’™. 🐒 ❀️

Happy Hawksbill Day! Found in coral reefs worldwide, hawksbill turtles help maintain the balance by eating sponges that could otherwise outcompete corals for resources like space, sunlight, and nutrients. Discover more about how hawksbills help keep coral reefs healthy at www.seaturtleweek.com/hawksbill-day.

Happy Loggerhead Day! Here in SoCal, you're most likely to see a Loggerhead offshore during the summer months. Loggerheads in the Pacific travel across the ocean as juveniles from their nesting beaches in Japan to the Pacific coast of Mexico. When they reach 20-25 years old, they will return to Japan to breed and remain there for the rest of their adult lives. Learn more about these incredible creatures at www.seaturtleweek.com/loggerhead-day.

Today the SoCal Sea Turtles Traveling Turtle Table will be at Sun Harbor Marina in San Diego from 12 noon until 4 p.m. Come stop by to pick up some sea turtle stranding hotline decals and learn more about our local sea turtles!

HAPPY KEMP'S RIDLEY DAY! Kemp's are an East Coast sea turtle, since they only live on the Atlantic/Caribbean side of Mexico, as well as on South Padre Island in Texas, USA. They are the smallest sea turtle species, with most adults weighing around 100 pounds! On June 10th, we honor Kemp’s Ridleys, one of the most endangered sea turtle species on the planet. Learn more at www.seaturtleweek.com/kemps-ridley-day.
