Meet Dana, one of San Diego’s 2026–2027 Shinshinim!

Driven by curiosity, resilience, and a love for Israel, Dana is excited to spend the year building connections and sharing Israeli culture with our community.

In high school, Dana studied chemistry and physics and spent three years involved with Tzofim (Israeli Scouts), taking on leadership roles as a counselor and mentor. She also dedicated her time to volunteering, including supporting students with disabilities and helping organize relief donations.

Outside of volunteering and leadership, Dana loves staying active through Pilates, running, cycling, and swimming. Now, she’s excited to bring that same energy to her shlichut year and strengthen the connection between Israel and San Diego.

What does it mean to lead with courage?

From August 2–5, 400 young Jewish leaders from across the country came together in Minneapolis for the National Young Leadership Cabinet Retreat, building connections, learning from inspiring leaders, and exploring their shared responsibility to strengthen Jewish communities.

San Diego was proudly represented by our Cabinet members, who brought our community’s voice and perspective to the Retreat while building relationships that connect our local leadership to the broader Cabinet community.

Centered on ometz, the Hebrew word for courage, this year’s Retreat challenged participants to consider what courageous leadership looks like in practice. For Leah Nierman, attending her first Cabinet Retreat brought the meaning of courageous leadership into sharper focus.

From experiencing the strength of the Cabinet network to finding a community grounded in shared purpose, Leah’s reflections capture the moments that shaped her experience and what she is carrying forward as a Jewish leader.

Meet Amit, one of San Diego’s 2026–2027 Shinshinim!

With a love of Israeli culture, creativity, and bringing people together, Amit is excited to share her stories and experiences with our community this year.

In high school, Amit studied biology and theater and was involved with Tzofim (Israeli Scouts) for many years, growing from a counselor into a leadership role mentoring others and giving back to her community.

Having experienced Jewish community life in the U.S. as a child, Amit knows firsthand how meaningful these connections can be. Now, she’s excited to spend her shlichut year building relationships, sharing her perspective, and creating meaningful connections throughout San Diego.

Mazel tov, Team San Diego! 🏅

The delegation recently returned from the 2026 JCC Maccabi Games in Kansas City, where San Diego teens competed, connected, and represented this community with real heart.

Five athletes from Sha'ar HaNegev, our sister community in Israel, wore Team San Diego colors alongside our own, making this Maccabi Games particularly meaningful.

And a big thank you to the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center for leading this delegation and for opening their arms to our Israeli athletes. Kids from two places, 7,500 miles apart, one team.

Also, congratulations to baseball coach Alex Kaufman, our Program Manager at Jewish Federation of San Diego, on a great competition!

On August 5, the Legacy of Light Goldberg Institute for Holocaust Education, powered by Jewish Federation of San Diego, brought the Spark Interactive mobile education experience and the Anne Frank: A History for Today exhibit to Torrey Pines High School for the San Dieguito Union School District's in-service day.

Through comprehensive tours and expert-led lessons, the team showcased the impact that the Institute's offerings can have on students' critical thinking skills, empathy, and understanding of history.

The 2026-2027 school calendar is now nearly fully booked, which means a full year of San Diego students meeting this history with teachers prepared to teach it.

More than 175 years ago, San Diego’s first known Jewish resident, Louis Rose, spoke those words with a belief in what this community could be become. Today, as Jewish Federation of San Diego celebrates 90 years, they feel just as fitting as we look toward what comes next.

We’re honored to be featured in the August issue of GB Magazine with an article exploring Federation’s history, the generations who helped shape our community, and how we continue to evolve for the future.

For 90 years, our story has been shaped by people who believed in what was possible and helped build it. That same spirit continues to guide what we build next.

Last week, our staff and their families gathered to celebrate a year of impact, reflect on what we’ve accomplished together, and look ahead to the work still to come.

Over the past year, we’ve had the privilege of serving our community in so many meaningful ways. We expanded opportunities for connection and leadership, deepened our partnership with Sha’ar HaNegev, strengthened local security and antisemitism response efforts, helped launch Legacy of Light Goldberg Institute for Holocaust Education, and continued investing in the people and systems that support this work. Celebrating together was a meaningful reminder of the dedicated team behind these efforts and their commitment to our community.

None of this would be possible without our volunteers, partners, donors, and community. Thank you for being part of this shared work. Here’s to another year of strengthening Jewish life together. 💙

They’ve arrived, and they’re already bringing the energy! 💙

Our 2026-2027 Shinshinim kicked off their time in San Diego by introducing themselves to our staff with a dance, giving us a little preview of the energy and personality they’ll bring to our community this year.

Please join us in welcoming this incredible group of young Israeli leaders, who will spend the next year sharing their stories, culture, and perspectives with our community.

Throughout the year, they’ll partner with schools, synagogues, and organizations across San Diego, building meaningful relationships, inspiring conversations, and strengthening the connection between our community and Israel. We can’t wait to see the friendships they’ll form and the impact they’ll make.
