Fusion Flow Afterglow TONIGHT❤️🥰
THE IMPORTANT STUFF:
- VAXX OR COVID TEST
The event has a Vaxx or negative covid test requirement. Please present either at the door. We will have some covid test available at the door.

- SHOES:
We will be on Vinyl floors, so you CAN NOT wear pointed heels. Wide based heels, or platforms are fine. Please don't come in you cleets 😳 Your best option is to bring your soft soled dance flats.

- WORKSHOP:
The Beat Will Make You Psychic is a workshop in Fusion musicality. We will be exploring how you and your partner can use a simple understanding of musical phrasing to add a dynamic and intuitive element to your dance connection.

- ALCOHOL / DRUGS:
No drugs or alcohol use at the venue!
There are lots of restaurants around us, so have fun before arriving, but we expect everyone to drink responsibly, and not show up intoxicated. Same goes for drug use. We share the time and energy we spend with our partner on the dance floor. If you dance with someone not in your conscious mind you unuconsetually share that with them.
The dance floor is a space of trust and vulnerability. Please respect and protect that space by taking care of eachother.

-COME AS YOU ARE!!!
Don't worry about being a good or bad dancer. Come curious and excited. Fusion is a "yes and" dance. There is no "right way" way to explore your dance connection. We are here to play, not perform, so have fun. 🥰

-INCLUSIVITY AND CONSENT:
- Fusion Flow is a q***r inclusive, anti-racist, consent forward space! Fusion Flow's facilitators are q***r and BIPOC and aim to create a space of connection, diversity and community for everyone.
- We use our words to ask for dances.
- We are free to say "no thank you" to a dance for any reason or no reason at all.
- We love it when our friends own their "no" and uphold their own boundaries! We don't take that personally. When we own our no's our yes's become more powerful.
- We don't assume dance roles (lead, follow, switch) based on gender expression. We ask our partners about their preferred roles! Switch dancing is common and encouraged in many fusion spaces.

WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT!

Fusion Flow - Afterglow (May 26th)
will have a workshop before our social dance from 8- 9 on Fusion musicality called…

“The Beat Will Make you Psychic”
As an essential part of dance I’d like to prioritize how the music we dance to is just as important as our dance partner. This workshop will focus on how a basic understanding of musical phrasing will make you and your partner resonate with an almost psychic connection.

What is phrasing? There’s a nitty gritty answer to this if we want to count out our musical bars and measures, but we all intuitively know when the base is about to drop. The honing of that intuition allows dancers to share a timing in the music so when the base does drop we're both ready for it.
Same applies to a smooth and silky verse, a punchy chorus, or hard hitting bridge. Everything you need to know is in the attitude of the music and a simple 8 count.

- What we will cover -
Intuitive listening: Where is the beat? When does it change? You are responsible for your own rhythm! Don’t worry so much if your partner is syncopating, half timing, or just standing still bobbing their head. So long as you both are listening to the music you can be musically connected.

5,6,7,8 DIP! So how do we prep for a phrase change? Okay, now an 8 count matters. We’re going to practice getting through that last measure without tossing your partner into a panicked dip.

Style for the follows: You often get to play with the beat in ways the leads cant. If the beat is there dance to it. Prioritize the beat in your connection instead of waiting for your lead too. If you are both listening to the music you will hit the phrases changes together.

Finally, we talk about attitude. What is the personality of the music, and what is it contributing to your dance. Is it a sultry, sexy, funny, dramatic, or joyful song? How can we embody the identity of the music, and share that with our partner? Well, let’s talk about texture in music.

This workshop is useful for all levels! It's only as challenging as you choose to make it. See you on the dance floor 🥰

Meet your instructor:
My name's Jack they/them. I'm a playful fusion nerd who has been teaching and organizing fusion events for a few years now. I have a dance background in Fusion (of course), Blues, West Coast Swing, and some New Style Hustle. I'm currently getting pretty excited about Tango and Zouk.

Fusion Flow is and will always be a q***r inclusive, anti-racist, consent forward space. Fusion Flow's facilitators are q***r and BIPOC and aim to create a space of connection, diversity and community for everyone. Connection is why we dance.
AT FUSION FLOW WE:
- We use our words to ask for dances.

- We are free to say "no thank you" to a dance for any reason or no reason at all.

- We love it when our friends own their "no" and uphold their own boundaries!

We don't take that personally. When we own our no's our yes's become more powerful.

- We don't assume dance roles (lead, follow, switch) based on gender expression. We ask our partners about their preferred roles! Switch dancing is common and encouraged in many fusion spaces.

*We all come from different backgrounds, and dance is for everyone. It is truly a universal language! If you're new to Fusion and it's community we encourage you to come with a positive and open minded attitude aimed at having a good time.
If you have any questions or concerns you are always welcome to communicate with the facilitators of the event at anytime.
Seriously, just tap us on the shoulder and say" can I ask you a question". We got you dude.
We can write all of this until our fingers go numb, but it's up to all of us to create the community we want to dance in. Respect, connect, and dance. ❤️

LIVE MUSIC!
Alethia Espinal is a talented Violinist and will be performing a hybrid DJ set for us all at FUSION FLOW - Afterglow on May 26th.
Alethia's set will be from 10-11, so come check it out 😍

Alethia is also the facilitator for First Friday Fusion and is a long time contributor to the SD fusion community. They have been hosting events since I started Fusion dancing. Check out the next First Friday Fusion a couple weeks after Fusion Flow on June 9th, which for just this month will be on the 2nd Friday. Lets do our best to promote the talent in our local Fusion scene! If you know anyone looking for a talented music teacher or violinist, send them Alethia’s way♥💛💛♥

About Alethia:
Growing up I was raised in a home full of music. My father, a graduate of the Conservatorio Nacional Superior de Musica (National conservatory of Superior Music) played piano day and night and from there my love for music blossomed. My first experience with music was at the age of 8 when I began to take piano lessons from my father. I decided to switch to violin when I was 12. I was introduced to violin thanks to the Waldorf School of San Diego and have played in the orchestra throughout all of middle school. After 8th grade I was accepted into Young Artist Symphony and played with them until 2011. My education in orchestras continued with USD Chamber Orchestra, and Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. I began to teach at the Waldorf School as an assistant orchestra teacher in 2011, and have since been teaching privately as well.

My goals when teaching is to teach the appropriate techniques in order to play violin successfully and to hopefully inspire love and appreciation for music. In my experience I have learned that every student has a different way of learning therefore it is important to adjust to every student's needs. Learning should be fun but it should also be disciplined, it is important to understand that there is a time for fun and a time to be serious when learning.
