Upstart Co-Lab, on behalf of The Prebys Foundation, is surveying for-profit businesses across San Diego's creative industries, including visual and performing arts, design, media, entertainment, fashion, publishing, digital content, creative products, and advertising. The survey is open through September 30, and the findings will guide how the Prebys Foundation directs impact investment to support this sector.

Barroncreekfarm is a nonprofit, regenerative farm that donates its harvest to those who need it most. Their San Diego location is in Oceanside and donates food through Feeding San Diego to Brother Bennos and the North County LGBTQ Center. They foster community through sustainable farming, education, and food accessibility.

They use regenerative farming practices to improve soil health, capture carbon, restore biodiversity, enhance ecosystems, and contribute to human health, while providing education around farming, food justice, and community health.

We asked Executive Director meg ferrigno what excites her most about her work. “The possibility of farms being much more than places where food is grown. I believe farms are some of the most essential and threatened businesses we have. Farms can nourish communities, mitigate climate change, support and share Indigenous values, create green jobs, and help build a more just and resilient food system.”

When asked why she joined BFG, meg shared, “I joined BFG because I believe in the power of community. Farms and farmers need strong networks around them, and BFG can help protect the rights and interests of both farmers and consumers. Nonprofits and businesses need to support one another, and BFG has built a beautiful system for that. Our work is inherently collaborative — getting healthy food to people who need it, educating our community, and practicing regenerative agriculture all require partnerships. BFG is a community that can multiply the impact of nonprofits like Barron Creek Farm through connections, relationships, shared knowledge, and collaboration. I’m excited to be part of a community where farmers, businesses, nonprofits, and community members can support one another and work together toward a healthier and more equitable food system.”

Barron Creek Farm is currently looking in the San Diego region to set up a third location. If you know of any organizations or businesses with more than an acre who want to support local food security, please contact them!

Waste Not Consulting is a woman-owned sustainability consulting firm that helps businesses see waste differently—not simply as something to throw away, but as an opportunity to reduce costs, improve operations, and create a meaningful environmental impact. They work with commercial real estate owners, property managers, and businesses to reduce waste, improve recycling and organics diversion, control costs, and navigate increasingly complex environmental regulations.

They take a hands-on approach, working closely with their clients to understand how their properties actually operate and then developing practical solutions that work in the real world.

We asked Co-Founder and CEO Ashlee Baker what excites her most about the work she does. “There is something incredibly rewarding about walking into a property with inefficient waste services, high costs, or low recycling participation and being able to identify opportunities that make a measurable difference. Sometimes that means helping a client save thousands of dollars through service right-sizing; other times it means increasing diversion, educating tenants, or helping a property move closer to its Zero Waste goals. Seeing a program improve over time, knowing that less material is going to the landfill and that our clients are saving money in the process, is what continues to motivate and excite us.”

Here’s what she had to say about why Waste Not Consulting joined Business For Good:
