Meet Sariah. She never surfed before and has never swam in the ocean either. Her first time was with Paddle for Peace. 🩵

She was scared and hesitant. The water splashing in her face only made her more uncomfortable. But her surf mentor Katie was patient and reassuring. Taking breaks when needed and even sitting on the sand moving at her student’s pace and comfort. More importantly she met Sariah exactly where she was and that’s where trust was built.

The photos show what happened once she knew she would be safe. Fear was replaced by joy and just like that, she had a mental shift.

We are so proud of your bravery Sariah and so thankful for surf mentors like Katie who help change lives one wave at a time! 🏄🏾‍♀️

Thank you to our partners for helping us spread joy at the coast!

We even had a visit by a friend of Paddle for Peace, Marine Safety Lieutenant Brian Clark. In the last 6 years we have never had anyone from the city just come to say Hi to us and welcome us to the beach. He answered questions and shared his journey to how he became a lifeguard which really inspired everyone! The rest of the day was all smiles. Thank you so much Brian! Your visit meant so much to us. 🩵💛

Huge thanks to our volunteers who make it happen!

From the beach to the capital building!

We went up to Sacramento for California Ocean’s Day and made our voices heard. Costal conservation starts at our local beaches but it doesn’t stop there. Advocacy sometimes requires a suit jacket.

Thanks to the and all of our amazing partners for helping us fight for our local communities.

We brought along our who shared their stories! This is what change looks like, and we’re so proud of young leaders.

Here are some of the topics we discussed:
1. Standing against offshore oil drilling
2. Preventing plastic pollution
3. Defending our coastlines
4. Strengthening marine protections
5. Building support for costal grant programs

Tis’ the season …. Again 🙄 sigh

What happened isn’t just about today. It’s about a pattern.

We showed up prepared with permits, with intention, with youth from communities that don’t always get access to spaces like this.

And still, we were the ones questioned.

Meanwhile, another school nearby WITHOUT a permit wasn’t approached in the same way. Same amount of kids, same reason to being at the beach (to teach students about our coast) but the only difference was there was a stark contrast in how each group looked and where they came from. This is not a woe are us situation this is a repeat pattern of how we get treated when we show up to the beach.

When you’re doing this work…bringing Black and Brown youth to the ocean, creating access, creating belonging you start to notice these moments.

And you have to ask… who feels welcome here?

We will always show up. We will always do things the right way. But we’re also going to speak on what we experience and we will continue to fight against a culture that creates narratives and laws to keep certain groups from enjoying public lands.
