Join us on October 3rd for an action to ask Belgium to 🇧🇪

As part of Ocean Week EU, we are organizing an action in Brussels to ask Belgium to join the moratorium on before the end of the year.
Right after the action, we’re also inviting you to participate in the panel discussion “Criminalising Ecocide to Save Our Ocean” at 14H in the European Parliament.

Leticia Carvalho has been elected as the new Secretary General, marking the first time a woman and scientist will hold the position. With 94 countries present and 30 more voicing support via proxy, this Assembly signals a global shift towards prioritizing deep-sea mining and ocean protection. 🌍

The movement for a moratorium on deep-sea mining is gaining momentum, with Malta, Guatemala, Honduras, Tuvalu, and Austria joining the cause, bringing the total to 32 states! 🌱

The groundbreaking “dark oxygen” discovery was also in the spotlight, emphasizing the need for more research before making decisions about deep-sea mining.

A recent poll in Belgium, Italy, and Poland shows a majority of citizens oppose deep-sea mining, isolating these countries in Europe, where many others support a moratorium.

Let’s keep pushing forward together for the protection of our oceans! 💪

🇬🇧The first week of ISA negotiations is over. If you’re wondering why we’re not sharing too much information about which countries have said what, it’s because there are certain restrictions on what can be shared outside the Council.

Here’s an explanation of how the various member states and NGOs are involved in the negotiations on the 107 mining code regulations.

It’s important to understand that even if the mining code is discussed in detail as if mining were to take place, we must keep in mind that a moratorium is what is most needed to protect the deep seabed.

To support our efforts to end deep-sea mining, you can use the social media toolbox in our bio to amplify the global campaign against DSM to your communities.🔥

🚨 BREAKING: Greece joins the moratorium on !!🇬🇷

This is the first time that Greece has taken a clear position on deep-sea mining, having been largely quiet while 25 other countries around the world voiced their staunch opposition to the prospect of the destructive industry. 🔥

We welcome Greece’s 🇬🇷 commitment to grow the alliance of States in favor of a moratorium or pause on ! Greece will also attend the ISA Assembly in July, which is great news for the upcoming negotiations in Kingston, Jamaica.

Congrats to Ministers 🇬🇷 and 🇬🇷 for signing the declaration with 🇫🇷, becoming the 26th State of the alliance.

Ce 4 juin, la Grèce a décidé de rejoindre le moratoire! Une immense victoire pour les fonds marins!🐙
C’est le 26ème pays qui se positionne contre l’exploitation minière des fonds marins.

Avec de nombreuses femmes inspirantes et engagées pour l’océan de l’association , nous nous sommes retrouvées en haut du glacier blanc, à près de 4000 mètres d’altitude, pour défendre les profondeurs de 4000 mètres dans l’océan et demander aux gouvernements de .

Nous sommes toutes et tous intrinsèquement connectés à l’océan via le grand cycle de l’eau. Nous ressentons le besoin de protéger l’intégralité du vivant, et nous devons donc renouer et retrouver le contact avec l’eau et la terre. Nous émerveiller devant la beauté et la complexité du monde, en admirant sa fragilité et sa résilience.

Chacune d’entre nous ressent le besoin de protéger l’océan. Et ensemble, nous pouvons travailler à toutes les échelles pour protéger l’océan, où que nous soyons. Les fonds marins nous appellent même du haut de la montagne, parce que nous savons que les gouttes d’eau qui s’écoulent de ce glacier se retrouveront un jour au fond des océans, et nous voulons que cet océan reste vivant et entier.

Partagez vos connaissances sur les fonds marins avec vos associations, vos proches, pour que nous nous reconnectons tous au vivant! Rejoignez-nous pour prendre action et encourager les prochains pays à rejoindre le moratoire! 💙🐋

Join us in celebrating the critical role the deep ocean plays in making life on Earth possible.
The makes up 90% of the marine environment, helping to make life on Earth possible for us all. However, just 5% of the ocean is estimated to have been explored.

The deep sea is the largest habitat on Earth, home to as many as 10 million species! This ecosystem is critical for climate mitigation as an enormous and natural carbon sink. It supports fisheries, and provides us with medicines and other as-yet undiscovered potential marine genetic benefits. It also has a significant and irreplaceable cultural value worldwide.

Although it’s difficult to access, the deep sea is not safe from human disturbances. Destructive bottom trawlers continue to plunder seamounts, pulverizing ancient ecosystems and destroying all life in their path. Meanwhile, a handful of companies and countries want to open the deep sea to mining, which would pose an unprecedented threat to the health of our ocean. Science warns that the damage would cause ecosystems would be irreversible.

With every exploratory journey into the deep sea returning with news of fascinating discoveries and revealing creatures uniquely adapted to life deep below the waves, it is crucial that we protect this environment, both for its intrinsic and functional values.
