In California, a similar lawsuit unfolded in San Francisco. On May 22, 2025, at least 10 deputies at the San Francisco County Jail, mostly men, rushed to the unit, removed a group of women from their cells and told them to strip. They were then subjected to a visual body-cavity search while male deputies watched, laughed and made comments. In late May, 20 women who had been held in the jail filed a federal civil rights class-action lawsuit against the city and county of San Francisco, alleging they had been illegally stripsearched while incarcerated.

An investigation into the everyday violence of prison strip searches, which incarcerated women say are a tool of abuse.

A recent analysis by the Prison Policy Initiative revealed an absence of national or international standards for menopausal care in carceral settings.

The increasing demographic of women over 50 within state and federal correctional facilities has underscored a deficiency in standardized healthcare provisions. Only a limited number of states provide documentation on the subject.

This systemic void compels incarcerated individuals to rely on peer networks for information. In some cases, managing symptoms leads to disciplinary actions for utilizing improvised materials, such as torn bedding.

Legislation that would improve public access to information about violence, medical emergencies, and other serious incidents in privately operated detention facilities in California is now heading to the governor’s desk.

It would require local agencies to release audio and records of 911 calls and other emergency-service calls originating from the facilities upon request. State Sen. Lena Gonzalez, a Democrat from Long Beach, introduced Senate Bill 423 as state investigations and courts are finding serious gaps in essential medical care within the facilities.

“No private contract or detention center wall should be used to hide dangerous conditions or silence people who have been mistreated inside these facilities,” Gonzalez said in a statement.

The California Legislature passed a bill that would force disclosure of information about emergency calls at immigrant detention centers. A Democratic lawmaker put it forward after reading news stories in CalMatters.
