San Diego Bird Alliance

San Diego Bird Alliance Together, we defend the region's birds, unique biodiversity, and threatened habitats through advocacy, education, and restoration.

San Diego Audubon is a chapter of the National Audubon Society, an organization founded in 1905 to stop the slaughter of wild birds for their feathers. The early Audubon Society engineered a series of legal victories, culminating in the Migratory Bird Act of 1913 that halted the plume trade and rescued many of the most beautiful birds we see today from the brink of extinction. Since 1917, San Dieg

o Audubon members have been dedicated to protecting and appreciating our local wildlife and their habitats. From the tidal flats of the Tijuana estuary to the fir stands on the crest of Palomar…from the foggy sycamore and oak groves of the coastal canyons to the sun-parched Borrego badlands, we actively work to preserve San Diego’s environment. Many of our chapter’s members are dedicated birders. Others just enjoy viewing the birds they see in their yards and at their feeders. We are conservationists, hikers, birders, and educators. And we share our experiences and values with others through a variety of nature-oriented programs.

That’s a Wrap on Birdathon 2026 💙🐦Together, we’ve raised an incredible $34,846! Last weekend, we gathered to celebrate, swap stories from the field, and recognize our Birdathon prize winners. It was inspiring to be surrounded by a community that believes so deeply in our mission and the future of San Diego’s birds.Whether you spotted dozens of species or simply cheered on a team, every contribution helped make a difference. Birdathon reminds us of what’s possible when we work together.

THANK YOU to everyone who birded, donated, fundraised, and supported conservation this year. We’re already looking forward to Birdathon 2027!

And while Birdathon may be over, the work continues. Conservation is a year-round effort, and we invite you to stay involved through our programs, events, and volunteer opportunities 🌿

Have you been looking for ways to get involved this summer? Check out our virtual BARK training tomorrow, birding by trolley, stewardship at Anstine and lots more.

On sunday, we’re partnering with WorldBeat Cultural Center and SoCal Bird Nerds for a powerful morning of remembrance, nature, and cultural history as WorldBeat Cultural Center hosts the 4th Annual Harriet Tubman Freedom Birdwatch in honor of Juneteenth and the legacy of Black resistance and liberation.

This is more than a birdwatch—it’s a celebration of heritage, resilience, and the deep connection between nature and liberation.

Free and open to the public.

A tiny bird. A big fight for survival. 🐦💙

This endangered California Least Tern was found at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve unable to fly and was rushed to International Bird Rescue for specialized care. Underweight, injured, and struggling to survive, this little seabird is now making encouraging progress thanks to the dedication of wildlife professionals and conservation partners.

At just 1.5 ounces, every California Least Tern matters. With the species already facing habitat loss, human disturbance, changing ocean conditions, and other threats, each successful rescue is a step toward protecting the future of this remarkable bird.

Watch it here:

A California Least Tern, an endangered species, was admitted to International Bird Rescue after being found at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach unable to take flight.

It's official. For the first time in the history of the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund, the City of San Diego is directing the majority of it to what voters prioritized: wetland restoration and water quality. The FY2027 budget has been adopted, and habitat restoration projects like De Anza Natural, Tecolote Creek, Cudahy Creek, and North Fiesta Island are moving forward. San Diego Bird Alliance is proud to have been part of the coalition that made this happen. 🌿💧🐦

San Diegans voted for wetlands, cleaner water and a healthier bay.

We’ve got a ton of outdoor events this weekend! Bring a friend or meet like-minded folx at one of our bird outings or nature journaling at Otay Mesa.

On Saturday, we’re partnering with the Nat, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and San Diego Coastkeeper to lead a bilingual (English and Spanish) bioblitz on Saturday, June 13, from 9:30 AM–12 PM to record the biodiversity found at Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge. We will be conducting a water- quality demonstration and creating artwork that celebrates the beauty of the Tijuana Estuary!

Whether you are a seasoned naturalist or just eager to explore, all you need is a sense of adventure, curiosity for nature, and a smartphone!

All are welcome 🤎

Come spend tomorrow morning with us at our Anstine Nature Preserve! We’re looking for volunteers to help spruce up the Riparian Trail by removing invasive plants, clearing brush, and helping restore the native habitat, and making sure the trails are fire-safe.

We’ll be working under a shady canopy of willows and grapevines, making it a great way to spend a morning outdoors. The wetter soils along the trail are a hotspot for invasive plants like stinging nettle and other prickly species, so we’ll be giving native plants more room to thrive while helping reduce fire risk by clearing fallen branches and loose brush.

Long sleeves and pants are highly recommended.
Gloves will be provided!

This volunteer work party is made possible through the Two For The Trails grant from Athletic Brewing Company, helping us maintain Anstine’s trails, support native wildlife, and stay fire-prepared.
